ack do you guys run a Street Prepared category? If so then headers should be permitted without going into SM. On page 100 of the SCCA rulebook in provisions for the SP category there is part I

I. Exhaust manifolds and muf
fler systems are free, except that they

must be quiet and terminate behind the driver. Exhaust heat shields
may be removed. Rear- and mid-engine cars without exhaust headers/
manifold systems may use any exhaust system that meets the

requirements of 3.5. This permits the removal of “heater boxes” in
order to install headers on such cars.

My car runs in SM due to internal engine mods, I would feel bad for anyone that got stuck there for headers, but I know each club has their own subset of rules that sometimes superceeds SCCA.

The benefit of running in SP is that cars that aren't factory FI can't go FI and the ones that are can't make modifications to the FI system. The only place where things could get fuzzy I guess would be how the club determines what is "quiet". Mine hits 105db at WOT Trying to get a new muffler setup to bring it down to 95db without adding cats back in, right now there are a few events I can't go to because the venue has a db limit.
