Default 07 tC oil change questions, wrong motor oil from dealer

guys,

I live in So Cal. I just brought my 07 tC to a dealer to have my first oil change. According to the manual, it recommends 5w20 and 0w20. However, the dealer gave me 5w30, and I asked ppl there and they said its recommended for all scions to use 5w30.

1.) What is the most appropriate motor oil for 07 tC? I was wondering why dealer would said that to me. If 5w30 is recommended, how come they dun put it on owner's manuals instead they suggest 5w20/0w20 in the manual. That does not make sense to me.

2.) If I use different oil rather than the recommended/the most appropriate oil, will it cause any problems to the engine?

Thanks a lot guys. I am a new car owner, sorry for all dumb questions

it's supposed to use 5w20

the TSB came out well over a year ago.

hmm... it won't cause problems really.. but your mileage may ever so slightly suffer. i would yell at someone.

I couldn't find the TSB but why did they change the 07 tC engine a little different from 06? My 06 tC, I use 5w-30 Royal Purple advance synthetic oil (Synerlic) and it runs realllllly smooth. My opinion is that Royal Purple is the best and 5W-30 is mostly all vehicle use. It feels different when I change from Mobile 1 to Royal Purple but its more expensive, 7 to 8 bucks each quart.

This happens everywhere.

I actually had Longo REFUSE to use 5w20. Then they had the stones to come back and ask that I PAY $14 to use the CORRECT type of oil that the friggin CAP asks for!!!!!

What's the point of a free oil change if the dealer is going to ask you for more money to use the CORRECT type of oil. What's next? Are they going to charge me extra for tires on a new car?

This type of BS bologna makes me NEVER want to buy a Toyota EVER again. We have, quite frankly, the WORST dealer service. I'd feel more comfortable having mentally retarded one armed hooker change my oil than a Toyota tech. Yeah, there may 1 or 2 guys that are ok, but for the most part, they are ALL scum.

Toyota's downfall will be its incompetent dealer network. From rediculous mark ups on hot vehicles (19k for a friggin Yaris? Yeah right!) to rediclous disregard for customer service. I'm paying them (with interest) over $20,000 dollars. I expect better service than I get with my 39 cent cheeseburger at McDonalds!

Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking to drain all the 5w30 out and put in new 5w20. Since everyone says 5w30 wont casue problems, I will keep it until next oil change. But I do not think its going to be in Toyota dealers as they refuse to use the right/better oil

I am planning to bring my owner's manual to the dealer tomorrow, and see what their explaination on using 5w30 will be. Seriously, I do not think they reall know what's the correct oil for 07 tC. I believe they just use 5w30 for all kinds of vehicles.

5w30 is a standard oil. . . and it's the type of oil that most Toyota's used to use.

The problem is that the #@!$)I#@!$ dealers have a butt load of it stocked, so they want to get rid of it. They don't have much 5w20 at all, so they are going to charge you for it since they don't want to run out (and god forbid, they have to spend money to buy some more).

It's like how the dealers crap out on warranty repairs, since they don't really see any money for it, they don't want to waste their time.

The whole point of a free oil change was to introduce us to the dealer's service and get us to start using their services (and thus make money). All the free oil changes have done for me was to confirm how much I hate Toyota dealers and that I never want to see them again. It's ____ed me off so much that I don't even want to own another Toyota. I love my car and I love the product, but the service is just too awful. The warranty might as well be worthless with the quality of service we get from the dealers. And it's not just one, it's many.

Longo Toyota (F'd me on the oil change), Glendale Toyota (horrible customer service, with the exception of Matt (Scion Sales) who is a totally cool dude), R&G Toyota(dented my door), Hanlee's Toyota(3 hour oil change, w/appt!) you deserve to all die and rot in hell.

I've owned 2 Toyota's, 1 Lexus, and 2 Scion's. . . unless they fix the dealership network, my next car is going to be a VW, BMW, or a Honda. I have absolutely no faith in my warranty, as it is supported by the biggest scum sucking people in the world.

OK, I just wanted to clear Longo's name. They in fact contacted me and MORE THAN rectified the situation. I now have a renewed faith in Longo (although I still believe that 99.9% of Toyota dealerships are scum). But to be fair, Longo fixed the situation, and did so in a very considerate, professional, and caring way.

I was very impressed with the response of their service manager, and will continue to do ALL future business with their dealership.

My advice to the rest of you with this problem is to file complaints and start making a lot of noise. The dealers are REQUIRED to use a minimum of 5w-20, and if they tell you otherwise, they either A) don't know what they are talking about or B) are full of **** and don't care.

Longo cares. . . and it shows.
