Default Brake pads for the front

My brothers xb needs pads for the front but nowhere has them at least none of the chain auto parts outlets, they all say there special order.I'm about to call the stealership (just dealership guys) and see what they have but my real question is whats the deal with not having pads for the front i know the cars based on the echo and we've found echo pads but are they the same? anyway I'm off to call the dealership but any help from you guys would be great as I'm trying to remedy this problem and gain a better understanding into his vehicle.Hopefully i didn't mis a previous discussion.

I'll tell you this much before the scion my brother had a 2001 corolla s and they were pretty much the same pad (don't quote me on that) and the one the guy at kragen showed us for the echo pads they had in stock and they looked the same as the one i just installed from Toyota for the xb.The parts guy said we had to buy a $30 shim kit with the pads because people were complaining about noise but they looked exactly like the ones that were on the old pads i pulled off.So maybe there tired of hearing people complain only to find out they ditched the shims or something so now they require it,i don't really know.It would make sense that the pads were a parts bin item of another car or even several cars,i wouldn't even be surprised if the the xb,xa,echo, matrix, carolla, and any other Toyota small car all share the same pad but it doesn't come up as a match in auto zones computers as being a cross platform item or something weird like that.

I'd like to expand on this question...

has anyone changed the front pads themselves? I'll be needing to soon enough and would like to do it myself.

Randode, Randode I'm looking in your direction...
