Default Check Engine Light on my TC

Hi all,

This weekend my check engine light popped on in my TC after I got gas. I figured it was because I hadn't clicked the gas cap enough. I tightened the gas cap some more and took a few more drives. The light still did not go out so I figured I would do a test. I pulled the ECU fuse and then put it back in. The light stayed on again. The next day I left in the morning for work and the light didnt come on. I figured I was in the clear and it was just the cap.

This morning as I was driving to work the light came back on. Should I try reseting the ECU again by maybe pulling the negative on the battery? Has anybody done this and is it a better way to reset the ECU then just pulling the fuse? Anybody else have the gas cap loose problem?

Either way I made an appointment at the dealer for Saturday. I would like to figure out first if it really is the gas cap.

How many miles do you have on your tC? Are you close to needing an oil change? -- That light will come on a little before 5,000 miles to remind you to get your oil changed.

Good luck!

It has 15K on it and I got the oil changed a week ago. It's not that light. I always reset the maint. light after the oil changes because ussually the dealer forgets to. This is the actual check engine light. (picture of engine with CHECK under it)

Thanks though.

Pulling the EFI fuse will reset all stored engine codes.

how bout you do the smart thing and take it to the dealer to have the code read

???? wtf is wrong with half you people, the CEL is on for a reason, it might be an evap code, it might be something else. stop thinking like cavemen and get it checked out.

"oh just reset the code, those CELS don't mean a thing"

and you BACK IN BLACK xA, you must be a lube tech or a complete moron to give that kind of advice.

in conclusion, GET IT CHECKED OUT

LOL. If you are scared of the dealer - read the code at AutoZone or some place like that - they will read it for free, then look it up in the service manual.

Not scared of the dealer, I would prefer going to the dealer.

The problem is I'm an accountant working for a Big 4 firm and its busy season. It's hard to find time to go to the dealer. I was fortunate to get an appt. on a Saturday. When I called the first thing they said was the Gas Cap and that 99% of the CEL's they have seen on stock TC's so far have been that. I just don't want to waste my free time going to the dealer if its something stupid that I can reset. I'm doing my due diligence by asking questions here. The light is still on, so I'm taking it in.

Big 4. Nice... Just hire a personal mechanic j/k

I almost went for an Accenture (former IT consulting dept of Arthur Andersen) job in Germany at one point, but decided to take a chance and move to the States instead. Boy, did I not kick myself in the back for that decision.
