Comming up on 1,000 miles, oil change?
i've heard some say that you should change the oil after the first 1000 miles, but i've heard others say that you dont need to. so should i change it when i hit 1k, or wait till the "reccomended" 5k miles?
does anyone read their manuals anymore? it states in there about changing it every 5000 or 7500 miles. todays engines are made a lot better then they were back in the day. there are better machining processes and 5000 is ok to do. it is a complete waste to do it at 1000 miles. everyone has theories, but they are just that.

Was discussing this 3000-5000-7500 mile oil change with a mechanic just yesterday (synthetic vs petro too). Anyway, he 'believes' the additives in today's oil is what is allowing the longer change intervals. Of course we're seeing an ad blitz for extended run oils all the time now.
Since I don't know it could be the better materials in the engines, the better oils, or some combo of both. Or it could be something all together......

As far as someone mentioning to wait until later to switch to synthetic.. there is absolutely no reason to do that. I do my first change at about 3k and use synthetic. I change at 4k or so from then on.
no one actually knows the one answer to this question, because there apparently isn't one. That's somewhat aggravating for DIY people. "so when do I change my oil?" ----> TEN FREAKIN' ANSWERS.
Here is how I approach it. You cannot overchange your oil as far as your engine is concerned. The newer and cleaner your oil is the better. So it wont hurt to go a little early on your first one. That is also how I feel about synthetic change intervals. I use synthetic and change at 4k. It costs me a whopping $50 per year more than waiting until say 7k miles, and it is doing nothing but good. So even if I am wrong, I am not doing my engine any worse by removing combustion byproducts and replacing oil sooner. So I say err on the safe side if you have question.

If you change and 1k miles, your wasting perfectly good oil!
Change it at 3K if you want, but not 1k!
People who say " ohh, you have to change it at 1k to release all of the metal shavings"
HELLO! our oil plugs have a magnet on them to collect metal shavings . I changed my oil at 3K and there wasnt a single shaving of metal on my xB's plug.....
