Default Did parts give me wrong oil filter?

I bought an oil filter (Part # 90915-YZZF2) and thats not the same as the regular one, I think its Part # 90915-1004 (according to McGeorgeParts). The Parts guy said its fine since the openings are the same diameter. But the oil filter is a lot shorter in height than the one I usually get.
Was this guy right, or a complete moron?
Should I expect any problems if I were to use the shorter one I just bought?

Thanks!

Well you ask, i supply the pics.. got these awhile back.. guy was comparing the 10004 (the one with the red gasket on top in the pics).. and the yzza2 and the yzza1.. the "2" is shorter.. sure it fits but not as much filter material.. the yzza1 is more of a match for the 10004 factor oil filter.. i would rather use the yzza1 than the yzza2.. in my opinion..

first pic is the yzza2 and the 10004.. 2nd pic is the yzza1 and the 10004 (on right)

it isn't smaller to save on filter material. it is actually recommended for different engines. the xA and xB can use it. it is actually recommended for the following applications:
3SFE, 5SFE, 4AFE, 7AFE,1ZZFE, 4ALC, 1NZFE, 1NZFXE, 5EFE, 1AC, and 3AC.

we have the 2AZ-FE in the tC. it "fits" but is not the recommended size filter. it really doesn't belong on a tC.

The newest is the YZZF1. Not only is it longer, it's made with a different design in the filter element and I believe it's Japanese instead of Taiwanese.
I got a 10-pak from trdsparks.com.
You don't want the shorter filters on your tC, but in a pinch, it probably won't hurt for a short run.

yeah, I think I will be returning this in exchange for another filter. I know it still "works" but I'd rather not risk it. What do you guys think if I just keep the same filter on and change every other oil change instead of every change (thats 10,000 mile intervals, since I change my oil every 5000 as recommended by Toyota/Scion)

exactly....just change the filter when you change the oil regardless of the interval.

so then that's what it is.. thanks for clearing that up.. that the yzz2 "fits" but it's actually not for the tC's engine (2az-fe)..

and yeah ALWAYS replace the filter when you do an oil change.. that's like wearing dirty socks with new shoes.. okay i had another analogy but it wasn't as clean.. lol.. was dirty underwear.. nevermind.. you get the idea.. change the filter

ALSO.. don't forget to get a new oil drain plug gasket/washer too (a toyota one).. piece of mind for about 10 cents..

np....yeah, toyota released the motor applications for each filter and ours isn't one of them for the A2.
the A2 filter is mainly for the 1.8s, not the 2.4s.

Well my former local Toyota parts guy was actually fairly intelligent, especially with Scions.

He said the 90915-YZZF2 was the standard for all Toyota and Scion 4-cylinder vehicles, but since there was room for the longer 90915-YZZF1 on the Scions, that was what he recommends, and what that particular dealer uses.

You should all (those who really care for the right info) read these threads on BOTOG.

Toyota Oil Filters (clickme)

Next thread (clickme)

Lots of info, but it's good info.

My guy *may* have told me wrong. I never saw a sheet showing the recommended oil filters, and doing a little looking, I am seeing the 10004 as being recommended for the tC.

There's no opposing opinions.
Use the Toyo YZZF1.
It's the right filter.
The older 10004 is still ok, but it's not the current part.

NP - but to make it more confused, there was also a YZZA1, which was correct too, just not current.
If you look at the threads I linked above, you'll see more than numbers changed.
The older design was odd and looked to be more restrictive in flow. The new YZZF1 is more like the other filters in design, and I did see flow numbers which are good.
All in all, looking over the options, the only one you don't want to use is the YZZF2.
The others will work, but since the YZZF1 is current and by the data, appears to be the best, I use those.
As I linked to, trdsparks.com has 10-paks for $35.

Default orange gasket

the 10004 is just the factory installed filter. All toyota factory installed filters have orange gaskets. I have never seen these orange gasket filters sold anywhere. But I won't say you can't get them, because I'm sure you can. It doesn't matter which one you use, they all work on the tC. I've worked in a toyota dealership for over 2 years now, it makes no difference, althought theoretically the larger filter will filter better or last longer. If you change your oil every 3-5k like toyota recomends it won't matter. These engines are so well designed you could even go 7k to 10k on occasion with no problems. With todays engines, current oil and filter qaulities, it really makes little difference. If the gasket and threads mate up, you're good to go.

That's partially true, but there are differences in filters, which is why Toyota and others constantly try to make them better.
There are only two things that matter with an oil filter (assuming all else to be normal)
1) Flow
2) Filtration

Improvements in one or both of these help the engine run better and last longer.
