Default How to fix clear coat abrasion

First of all, let me state for the record that I am a dumbass.

Here's what happended.

I debadged the box today. Yes, dear reader, it is exactly what you think: In my fervent effort to remove the leftover goo, I rubbed a little too hard with the wrong stuff and left myself a nice little 5"x4" dull spot in my otherwise immaculate exterior paint job. I either went through the clear coat to the paint or I royally fubar'd the clear coat.

That being stated, is there any good way aside from getting it touched up profesisonaly to get some shine back in that spot? I tried glaze and wax, and tomorrow I'm gonna go out and get some meguiars scratch x. Short of that, I think I need to get it touched up at the shop.

So, do you have any tips, taunts or suggestions?

I've heard NuFinish works well.

I like Scratch-X. Good stuff.

Waxing ofer this mistake is not what you need to be after. A polish is what you will need to buff it out.

What did you use to cause the abrasion?

I used goo b gone and a dish pad to scrub it off.
I need to see it in the light to see what the actual damage is.

Awesome. I'll pick some up tomorrow.
Thanks for the input.

Like a brillo pad? That was the problem there. That product is made to scuff surfaces.

Next car you debadge, just use a towel, or your fingers.

i just cried. our scions have a super soft clearcoat, a dish pad is serious trauma
good luck with the haze removal. go with scratch x on a damp microfiber cloth, don't rub hard
if you know anyone with an orbital polisher, like a porter cable 7424, that will make your life easier
if that fails and it really bothers you, goto a detailing shop and see what they can do for you
my friends dad removed bird poop with a scotch brite pad on his van and couldn't understand why the surface was so dull....he never did fix it

good idea, i'm glad you went with that method

i'm also happy to hear that our clearcoat can take some damage and still be repaired...i doubt it would be able to take much more polishing though in that spot

I know! I was worried that I'd be stuck with that dull spot for the duration, but the shop did a damn fine job restoring the shine.
And yeah, that spot will probably have to have some special attention paid to it for a while now.
