i am new to the site and yes i have already done a search and read through i think all of the post on this, my question is how do you pull an engine code on the xB so i can figure out the basic location of the problem.

Did you put a cold air intake in? I put one in and had the same problem. Had to take it out to get rid of the problem. Disconnecting the battery didn't work for me.

i have had that happen to cars here on the lot. i took it to the service department and parked it. when they went out to look at it the lights were off. there were no codes no nothing. the lights just went off. i have also had a customer call me about this problem. i told her to drive it and the lights will go off. she called back later and told me they went off. never came back on again.

i gave the gas cap a really good twist and did the reset with the fuse and it is fine now.

the dealership we bought it from took us and topped off the tank befor sending us on out way and i can say that i would have noticed that nasty clacking sound the gas cap makes and my wife said she never heard it either.

i was more or less interested in if there was a way to read the ECU codes without having a dealership hook it up. figured i could track it down to see where the problem was coming from.

You can get an OBDII reader from almost any auto parts store. They will read most codes. There are some codes that are specific to Toyota and might not get picked up by a generic reader, but for the most part you can at least get a sense of what is throwing the code. I got a cheap one at Pep Boys for around $100.

I had the same trouble it was my intake causing the MAF to become dirty, but that is not to say this is what is causing your troubles.

PM KinLou he knows how to do it, I forgot how he did it though. He knows the way for the xA and xB, not sure if he knows how for the tC though. But yeah he knows the answer. :D
