Yeah, the xB has a 11.9 gallon tank, and that's probably including the fill tube! There's no way you could have put all 13.5 gallons into your car.
When the idiot light turns on, you still have about 3 gallons left, which means you could have only put in about 9 gallons into your car...
Where'd the rest go? Under your car? Bad gas meter? :?

I checked under the car (xB) and saw enough space down there for them to easily make a tank with 2 or 3 more gallons. Would be great to get some more range. Make long trips easier by elimating 2 or 3 gas stops.
Would it be possible to put an aftermarket fuel tank on this car? One that can hold 15 gallons?

Bad meter. I've literally coasted into the gas station on two occasions and got 11.49 and 11.56 gallons in there. Of course I don't top off, I stop when it clicks off, but there ain't much more room there, definitely not two gallons.
BTW, Don't top off your tank. When it gets too high, it will flood your charcoal canister, which is only supposed to capture fumes. also, split fuel is not just a waste, it's very bad for the environment and smog. Unburbt fuel is very bad, that's why we have cat converters...

I had 1 gallon in my tank and I saw the gas icon flash next to my clock as I turned off my car. After class, I turned the car back on and got nothing. I went to the gas station and filled up 10.9 gallons...

A few years back, an independent chain of gas stations were regularly getting reported to the weights and standards department for having inaccurate gas pumps. Every time the W&S people would go out and pump 5, 10 and 15 gallons into a standard tank holding 5, 10 and 15 gallons, it came out accurate. They would go back to the office and report everything was OK. But soon enough, they would get more reports regarding the same stations.
Eventually, some bored gas pumper watched their $ going into the tank and noticed something fishy. For the first four gallons the $ meter ran real fast and on the fifth gallon it ran slow then ran fast again till it got to the ninth gallon where it ran slow till gallon ten. However, the gallons meter was always progressing at a constant rate.
As it turns out, the “special” meters charged more for the first four gallons and then less for the fifth gallon. The gas station knew that most customers don’t know how much their car holds or actually fill their tank. It is much easier to just buy $10 and go. (remember when $10 would fill your tank?) With a gas price at the time of $1.10, $10 at a normal pump would buy you 9.1 gallons of gas. With the non linear pump, you were paying $10, but getting less than 9 gallons. If not for this observant customer, this gas station would have gotten away with it.
