looking to put a cheap set of tools together of the most commonly used tool any recomened tools you can suggest???

just the basics like when i have to make repairs while on the go kind of deal

 

Metric socket set. Metric wrenches. 9lb sledgehammer. Duct tape. JB Weld.

 

If you plan to work on your car a lot, the best tools to get is a Metric set, torque wrench, oil filter cap, floor jack and jack stands.

 

get craftsmen tools, whenever one breaks or its just not working as good as it did when you got it, you can just take it back to sears for a free replacement. for most their tools

 

i was more in the lines of keeping a set in the car

 

Torque wrench.

 

Though there isn't much use to keep tools in the car, there are a few I would recommend for any car:

- Accurate tire pressure reader. Never rely on the gas station readers. From $3 to $15.

- Mini flare kit. Great for emergency situations. $7 to $16

- Duct tape. All around usefulness. $2 to $4

Disposable Camera. If you ever get into an accident, a picture is worth a thousand words.

 

batteries do go bad unless they have ones that they don't need batteries

u mean for the tire press reader? alot of em arent electric . but yeah fo an in car kit i'd say a medium sized phillips and standard screwdrivers , 14mm , 12 mm , 10 mm , 17 mm , 19 mm socket set with ratchet , 14mm wrench , electrical tape , superglue. thats what id say for a in car kit. that and a hose clamp . it never hurts.

 

i have a great analog tire gage i meant for the disposible camera

get a metric set at sears (craftsman) for those sizes u can find a nice 9 piece kit for like 20 bucks and it comes with a ratchet. then just buy a cheap ol no name wrench , and two cheaper type sears screwdrivers. that whole kit will be almost 30 but most of it will have a lifetime warranty and be good quality. i miss workin in tools at sears.

 

add 21mm and 22mm and 8mm to that list

those are all the sockets you need on a toyota unless you need to take off the axle nut which you will not do

 

now can't forget about the shop books now

add a wire crimper/stripper tool
and a nice cheap drill set won't hurt either ($20) If you can, go plug in, rather than the battery. . . they tend to last longer, have more torque, and are cheaper. Battery operated ones are just handy, but in my experience not suitable for auto use.

Also those ratchet style screw driver -multi tools, that carry 11 bits in em are handy. . . I got one and have used it often. As well as normal socket sets.

 

get a disposable without a flash, that wont need batteries i think

 

Disposable cameras have a shelf life of 1 1/2 year with the batteries. After that you have to get a new one, but for five bucks you can save yourself a LOT of trouble in case anything ever happens and they always do.

I once got into an accident with my E30 M3 when someone sideswiped my rear fender. With the pictures I took with the camera I was able to pull the car over to the side instead of blocking the intersection and wait for the police to write a report (and usually the reports they write lack any detail) You can use it to catch license plates, damage, people, anything.

I got a nice expensive Crafsman Tools with the tool box from auto College I attend. There's everything I need to work on the car and the most important are sockets and open box wrenches. I'm getting rid of my tools for half of what im paying , so if interested pm.
