necessary to disconect batery during installation of...

Hey i just need to settle an argument with my buddy, does anyone know if it is really necessary to disconect the negative batery cable when installing an intake or exhaust system?

not really necessary but it would help the car read everything quicker and adjust now rather then later..

nope, not necessary. my intake was installed with the battery connected.
the CEL came on for about 30 secs, then went away.

all is fine
