ok i went back and got the 5w 20.

OMG i am assuming u can't take the oil filter off by hand? guess i need to go get an oil filter wrench to take it off.

Do i need to put it on hand tight or tighten it with the oil filter wrench?

Tightening it by hand should be fine. But make it tight. And don't forget to put some oil along the gasket of the new filter.

There was DIY here in SL somewhere. Oh well, here's from Popular Mechanics' http://www.popularmechanics.com/how_...46.html?page=1

when taking it off use a leather belt to help you.
When tightening the new one back on you SHOULD HAND TIGHTEN it. 3/4 to 1.25 of a turn to the right after the threads begin to max out. Make sure the new one is snug and lubed up.

LOL its just an oil change. Get Mobil 1 or Royal Purple 5w-20. Use 4 quarts exactly, it actually calls for a little less then that but 4 is fine. You should be able to put on and take off an oil filter by hand. Dont be afraid of using a little muscle to take it off. I usually buy 4 quarts of Royal Purple 5w-20 or Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-20 and I get a Mobil 1 M-103 Oil Filter or Fram PH4967. Good Luck

that is correct, i buy the K&N oil filter because it is easier to remove with a wrench that is 1/2"mm and yes you hand tighten it because if you use a wrench and over tighten it then the filter will start to cromble slowly because of the oil pressure.

FRAM? I'd rather duct tape a pop can filled with toilet tissue and used tampons than use a FRAM piece of crap.

For an average priced filter, go with a Toyota, Wix or Purolator. If you want a premium filter, get the Mobil, K&N or Amsoil.

This engine came from the Camry line. The new corolla does use this engine now.

The manual says it's 4.0 quarts but I've seen different tC's take 3.7, 3.6 and 3.8quarts. And yes the oil was drained out completely and new filter installed.

Best thing to do is to fill it with 3.5quarts, then add until you can get it up to max without overfilling.

In 02-2006, Toyota release a service bulletin updating that all 06's should be using 5w-20 oil. The 05's have remained 5w-30.

In 2007 the engine was redesigned (think tweaked) and they changed the oil to 5w-20, with an option to run 0w-20. This same engine is used today.

my sister's car was turbo and they recommended 5w-40 so if your hard on the gas pedal then i guess 0w-30 shoud be fine.

lol i was thinking of going 0w-20 but that stuff is water thin...

Exactly right! Fram quality has gone in the crapper. Avoid Fram filters at all costs.

The Tough Guard Fram is the only one of theirs that is any good. Still not the best though. I just switched to Royal Purple 5W30 and a Mobil 1 filter. I had to use the famous screwdriver method to get the filter off since the dummies at Wal-Mart overtightened it.....I had a last minute out of town trip and made the mistake of going there. When I got the drain plug off, the gasket wasn't there! No more oil changes anywhere but in my driveway!

Isn't "low friction" redundant when referring to a motor oil product? I mean, who uses high friction motor oil? lol!
