Oil Change Tips...
OK...I'm one of those who like to do the first oil change at 1,000 miles. Now that I'm almost there, can anyone here tell me how hard it is to do. Any tips or suggestions?
Oh, Do I need a new oil plug gasket? I'm assuming this engine uses a metal gasket?
I bought 4 quarts of that new Mobil 5000 motor (5w-30) oil and high efficiency Mobil oil filter.
Thanks in advance!

1. run your car around the block to operating temp
2. pop open the oic cap on the motor to vent
3. get approate boxed end wrench and drain bucket
4. drain oil and wait
5. turn oil filter off. be careful its hot!
6. put oil around the new filters' gasket new or old it doesnt matter.
7. tighten oil filter HAND TIGHT!!!!!!!!!
8. install new drain plug gasket (if it had a gasket on it)
9.tighten but not too tight
10. put in recomended amount of oil.

Yea, the guy at the dealership said that my first oil change would be at 5000 miles, too. I thought that was weird, but I believed him. Is that still ok? It won't hurt if I waited till 5000, will it? I'm at 4000+ right now.
I've gotten so many mixed messages on the early oil change
thing. Even the techs at the dealership gave me the "do whatever
you feel more comfortable with" answer.
I did my first change at 1100 oil looked fine.
Used Dealership for change at 3000 oil looked fine.
Switched to Mobile 1 at 6000 and oil looked baked.
I'm going to change the oil at 10,000 and every 5,000 after
that, I'm hoping the next oil change doesn't look as rough as
the 6,000 mile one did.
I'm also experimenting with different oil filters. I have Pure One
on now, I'm going TRD next.

I took mine in to the dealer at 1000, and they just wouldn't do it. They said it was too soon and told me to come back at 3000. I tried again at a little over 2000 and the guy didn't even ask quesitons and did it as one of the free ones. I checked the oil at 2000 right before taking it in and it looked real clean, but i got the change anyway.
You get 3 free oil changes. It is up to you when you use them. You could get them every 10 miles if you want to. You could also "save" them for a bit and do your own for a while. It's up to you. I used my first free one at 500 miles. My second free one is coming up in a few days at 3,500 miles. When I use 3, I'm done. They don't care when I use them.
you all shouldnt worry about changing your oil so early. Toyota knows what there getting intoo. i beleve you have a certain amount of time to use your free oil changes.
what does your dealer use for oil? i think mine uses Superflow/exxon

Got my first oil change at the dealer at about 2400 miles and changed to Castrol Syntec then. No hassle from dealer, it was free, and I'm ASSUMING that it was one of the 'Scion freebies' even though they didn't mark it off in the book...
(One has to get all three "free" oil and filter changes anywhere within the first 36,000 miles - after that Scion doesn't pay the dealer for the freebies.)

an oils color is not an indication of wear or protection. If it were, you would have to change the oil in a diesel engine every time you drive it.
The only real way to know if the oil is "good" is to have it analyzed, but with current prices, it's cheaper to just change it if you are using conventional oil.
I'm just over 1700 and I'm going to change it next week before the first "road trip" next weekend.
