Default Orange "Maintenance Required" light?

On the dash, there is a little orange "Maintenance Required" light that as of last week, is lit when I drive. According to the manual, it means the oil must be changed, but according to the dealer, the oil was changed right before the car was traded in, and he had the receipts from the previous owner to prove it. He told me that what must have happened was that the place the had changed the oil had forgotten to reset the counter, and the light came on because of it.

My question is:
1. How do I reset the light/counter?
2. This is my first car, how would one check if the oil needed to be changed?

Thank you in advance

To turn the light off:

Oil should be changed every 5000 miles according to the manual.
