If I remember right the computer holds you out of OD when the car is not up to running temp. This may be the problem you are having.

Does it just delay kicking in, or never kicks in. xB computer realizes you just got on it, and it is still thinking you are wanting acceleration, or will be shortly. There is a delay. I have had this happen going up mountains, it shifted out of OD, and then when I crested the hill, and let off the gas, it takes a while for the OD to kick in. If it never does, then have the dealer check it out

Default overdrive

I have an RS 2.0 with auto. If I go up a hill and it drops out of overdrive, it has a delay before reengaging. Even after topping the hill and letting offf the throttle. It is like the computer is waiting to see if you are going to climb another hill and need the lower gear. I have 20600 miles on my box, and it has been this way since day one. So I don't think it is something to worry about. Just Toyotas way of compensating for a low power engine.

whoa im totally lost with the overdrive in automatics, is there a specific time that you press the button? the reason i ask this is because in my xb i always have it on, i thought it was always supposed to be on. is that bad to do?

The overdrive is always on (unless you press the button and turn it off. It will "remove itself from overdrive (first slight "downshift" that you feel when accelerating after overdrive has kicked in) when an additional load is put on the engine (going up a hill, or accelerating on the flat). xB manual says to just normally leave the overdrive on. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
