Default Question about oil change and warranty

Ok, so I am going to go in for my first oil change today, if I find the time, I have a question that has been nagging me since I bought the car. 07 RS3.

The dealer told me that I have to use a Toyota Oil Filter to retain my warranty, is this true? I don't plan on going to the dealer to have my oil changed, unless I have to use that Yota filter. I would rather have it done in town at a trusted quick stop that I have been going to for years.

They told me to bring it in at 3000 or 3 mo. I am at 500 and 3 mo, lol, I don't drive far. I know the first 3 or so oil changes are some of the most important ones so I though I would just get it done anyways, even really before it needs it.

Thanks for your time,

That is pretty much the dealer bs'in you. I work at a dealer and have never heard of service denying warranty work over an oil filter. However, Scion pays for the first 2 maintenances so why not get your first 2 oil changes for free at the dealer?

deffinetly dont need to use their filter. If they use that as reasoning to deny warranty work, file a claim with scion corporate.

you don't have to use anything...

that's such BS... though OEM toyota filters are technically the best for the car imo anyway.. lol

i still use them and they work great... i use redline synthetic oil with the toyota filter.

wrong "dealer dude". Its 3 free oil & filter changes. I wouldnt complain about using the Toyota filters. In a thread about changing your oil it comes to find out its the best one for the tC. I quickly switched back to using Toyota filters and bought a 10 pack from TRDSparks.com. However i still use Mobile1 oil.

IDK about the warranty thing with the filter but on my 3rd oil change i took my Mobile1 oil and Mobile1 filter and they changed it as the last free one. The service guy told me he wasnt supposed to do it cause they have to use their oil and filters but he didnt give me nothing about my warranty. He just put on the paper that they used their oil and filter.

Sorry man I'm off by a year. 07- get the 3 free and 08+ get the 2 free. Either way I don't work at a Scion dealer I work at a Lincoln Mercury. At least out our place the only reason we deny warranties is because the old farts can't keep track of time and let it expire. 85 yr old people don't mod their town cars too much.

Well, thanks for the replies. As it turns out I did not have time to get the oil changed today, maybe tomorrow.

I would always do the work myself but I have no garage anymore

I would get the 3 free but I have no desire to drive 30 miles to get the oil changed, and I don't trust the service department at that dealer, at all.

I had a feeling the dealer was pullin my leg when he mentioned the Yota oil filers.

Thanks again for the info.

^^^but why pay for the oil/oil filter...and get dirty doing it yourself? ive changed oil many times in many different cars, and each time i wished i didnt as i scrubbed my hands afterwards...

you can always get it done at another toyota dealership if the one closest to you is shady.

I don't know if a non OEM oil filter will void the factory warranty, which I doubt, but I know some aftermarket oil filters will alter the engines oil pressure. Not by alot, but proper oil pressure is important to the proper operation of the engines VVti system. The advance of the valve timing relies on oil pressure. Although, the service advisor pretty much BS about the warranty, I would suggest listening to their advise on continuely using the OEM oil filter for the sake of the VVTi system.

I would use it to be safe so if anything happens you dont have to hassle with saying you used differnt filters etc. Then do it yourself/ local shop of your choice, thats what im doing in the up coming month.

I just buy the Toyo filter since its only about 6.75 here from my dealership and the K&N I bought was like 12 so for a better filter I'm sticking with OEM. I use syn. royal purple and havn't had a problem yet.

i frequently take my car to jiffy lube and walmart lube express. i on occasion go to the dealership when my car is up for the scheduled maintenence. I just had my 15K service done at the dealer and the oil filter they took out was a FRAM one. They didn't make such a big deal about it.

Why Walmart?
They use that cheap low quality SuperTech oil.

Not always the case, you can pay a little more on what ever quality brand oil they have in stock.
