Who here has plugged in the toyota data logger to the ECU... how tight does toyota monitor our driving habits? I.e how often we redline it etc..

Ill take a whack at this one... Several shops ive worked at have used the OBD II computers and ive played around with them allot... But as far as storing your driving habit data, it just doesnt happen... Well i mean storing it OUTSIDE of the car. Your OBD II can and does record when things go wrong or a code is thrown. Weither a code was thrown at idle or at redline makes a huge difference in trying to define the problem. So it does have its uses in that way. But as far as downloading your driver data to use it for other means, hell even D/l it at all just doesnt happen.

It doesn't do any kind of big brother type monitoring. However it can to some extent. People at my work told me a Celica came in with a blown engine, they checked the ECU and it had some code stored which said the code occured with vehicle speed at 120mph. Yet they claimed they never raced their car or anything.

 

Muahahaha...when I moved this thread, I was hoping Back In Black xA would see it...he's a Toyota Technician :D

 

Well, I suppose everything is wrapped up in a neat little package.

 

my tC manual has a disclaimer, notifying me that my ECU does record things like actual speed, engine speed, gear, throttle, brake, etc

my guess is that it's on a buffer and saves what was happening in the event of a crash

scion claims that they will never disclose the information with a 3rd party without the owner's consent, unless of course, the police ask for it.

definately something to think about, if you're driving a tC at least.

I just know that some places (won't mention) will take the information off the ECU to figure out how hard you've been driving the car and try to base warranty's off of that info.

I bought this car as a commuter car... of course i drive cars hard.. (it's a habit) just curious to see if there is anything I need to worry about if I ever have any problems.

you guys are gettin too worried bout this, just drive ur car...do the rec. maint. and ull be fine

I can tell you what you NEED to be worried about.... It common practice for subaru and mitsubishi reps to go to local SCCA races and other drag races to find people racing their cars... It HAS happened that they have taken down VIN #'s and voided warrenties on those cars. I know people this has happened to. The Irony is subaru GIVES you a SCCA membership (like an 80$ card) but doesnt allow you to race SCCA.

Well all I know is that my xas in the shop right now getting a whole new engine. I have run my car a few times but they didnt ask me or tell me anything. Maybe the code was thrown when I was driving normaly

 

dont worry the scan tool can only record data at the time of trigger yes it records freeze fram data relevent to the fault code vehicle speed and engine rpm but in my
17 years as a dealership master technician i have never been in a situation where
this data is used against a customer even when i worked for acura (11 years) where
ive seen more engines blown up in one month than i saw in 6 years working for toyota big brother is not watching you nor will he care even then it was very hard for acura
to deny a claim unless the saw very hard evedence of nos usage (like the rep had to see a nos bottle and injector controlls to consider denying an warr calim just drive
youe scions maintain them and most of all enjoy them

Toyota has some of the best warrantys in the industry. 50% of the stuff that breaks on them is the customers damn fault but Toyota will cover 49.9% of that stuff anyway. They want to keep customers happy.
