Can road salt, Actually hurt your paint?

i was wondering about this last night, one would think it could, but was wondering what u guys think..

i hate washing my car when its like 11' outside..

 

it can. if you dont like washing your car just go to a carwash it will help get most of the salt off. here in wisconsin they put way to much salt out. i have to wash 4 or more times a month.

 

Yes it can... and your best protection against damage is to rinse the car and underbody/crevaces off as much as you can, and keep a really good layer of wax on your ride, to protect the paint as much as possible....

What salt really does damage to is the underbody, when it gets into the little cracks and sits there... just eating away and contributing to oxidation....

Wax and rinsing are your best defenses against damage by salt.....

Or, just move to the west coast.... no salt used on roads here....

I was going to post a thread about this. In the airforce I do snow removal for the base. We use 5 ton dump trucks with salt spreaders to keep the base streets safe. You should see what the salt does to the solid steel beds of the trucks. I am going to take picks of where salt ate through 1/2 inch steel.

Usually the salt will only attack areas where paint is chipped or missing but overtime it will ruin everything.

When rinsing salt off your car, use cold water. Warm/hot water speeds up the chemical reaction that causes salt to oxidize metal.
