Default tc engine maintenance

This may have been done before but I didnt see it anywhere. But i think we should put all the information we know about the TC (or XA and XB) in regards to engine maintenance. Like a "how to" from everything from oil changes to tranny fluid changes and etc. So if people are doing their own work on their cars let us know how many miles your car had on it when you did it and how you did it... thanks

Don't think there's any "master thread" containing all this information. It's spread around in bits and pieces which would require a bit of searching.

If you have a specific question, maybe we can help you.

well not really specific... just planning on doing my first oil change for my tc and wanted to see what other people are doing. I wanted to see if anyone is doing anything in perticular that I should look into. I thought it would be a good idea to have everyone put their experience and maybe a "how to" for what they did and at what mileage they did it at.

Well here's my quick how-to for you on an oil change on the tC:

Note: you can do this by squeezing under the car or jacking it up slightly from the front. You will need a socket set, an oil drain pan, gloves if necessary, clean rags, etc.

1. Remove the oil when it's warm or hot if you have protective gloves, the warmer the better because you'll get more out. Let the oil drain for a good while until it stops drippings. Sorry can't remember the size of the socket you'll need to remove the oil plug.

2. Remove the old crush washer from the oil plug.

3. Clean the oil plug with WD-40/solvent/whatever you have on hand.

4. Install the new crush washer ($1.00 at the dealership).

5. Install the oil plug and tighten it to 30ft/lbs if you have a torque wrench, if not, just tighten it up but don't go crazy.

6. Remove the oil filter. I can almost always remove the oil filter by hand. If you try to remove it by hand and the engine is still warm, use a pair of protective gloves. A socket wrench connecting filter removal tool might help though if you can't get enough leverage to remove it. If that's the case, just take a new filter to an auto parts store and match up the filter with the size of the filter remover. Then you can take out the filter with a socket wrench, an extender and the filter remover.

7. With a clean, lint free rag, wipe down the oil filter seating (where the filter mounts on to).

8. Lightly lubricate the rubber seal on the new oil filter with a finger of clean engine oil. Usually I will fill the new filter with clean oil so there's no second between when the engine starts and when it gets the oil. Install the new filter. Do not use the oil filter remover to install the new filter. The filter should be installed hand-tight with one extra turn once it's snug against the seating.

9. Clean any dust or debris around the oil filler cap and remove it.

10. Add your oil of choice, 5w30 for 2005, 5w20 for 2006. I use AMSOIL fully synthetic. Four quarts should do it.

11. Install the cap, start the car. Let it run for a few minutes. Stop the car and let it sit for a few more minutes and then check the oil. Add more oil if needed.

It might sound overly complicated just for an oil change, but that's how I do it. You can always cut corners, but why dirty your engine up and cause problems?

Have fun.

Excelant write up so far. I thank you very much FromThisSoil. Now lets see if anyone has done their tranny fluid on a manuel, or grease up the bearings... stuff the dealership would do. I just never trust other people with my cars lol.
