If it is an automatic I recomend every 25-30,000 miles have the fluids removed and changed.........if it is a stick........well that is a good question.......I never changed fluids in a manual tranny ever unless I put in a new clutch or something........which used to be like avery year or so as I kept breaking something.

Every 30k. I wouldn't use anything but type IV. It can void your warranty. Make sure you get a flush done. Flushes all the old fluid out. A drain and fill will not take out all the old fluid. There will still be a good amount of dirty fluid in the tranny. Just like a drain and fill on a radiator will not take out all the dirty fluid in the cooling system.

It is an auto trans. and I am at 30k right now and will do it in the next two weeks. A trans. flush is a waist of money as any good mechanic knows you will not get all the dirty fluid out of the torque converter with out pulling it out of the car and draining. A simple change of the fluid/filter is all the dealer recommends as I found out and will not void the warranty after calling them. Also a drain and fill on the radiator WILL drain all the coolant out by pulling off the lower hose and changing the thermostat. You will NEVER get all the old coolant or trans. fluid out unless you take everything apart and clean it but that is to much work. I just do dealer recommend services and get 200k plus miles out of all my vehicles. thanks for the replies

Yeah you can not really get it all out........but if you get the majority out and add good type 4 fluid you are never gonna havea tranny issue.......trannys are one of the misslooked items on a car........I know many who have never changed the fluid and wonder why their cars die.........lol

I will absolutely agree with you that a trans. is the most over looked service out of all car maintence. It is a costly mistake also.

Went by the dealer today to pick up some toyota trans. oil to do my service. The conversation I had with the parts guy really reinforced that customer service is going out of the window.

Me- Which of these two oils do you recommend for my 07 Scion 30k trans. service that I am going to do myself.
w
Dealer- I am not sure.

Me- Well out of these two could you look it up in the computer to see which of these oils is recommended.

Dealer- I cant look it up in the computer but can you removed the part and bring it in

Me- OK but let me just say that this is for a trans. service and not a hard part.

Dealer- I understand but if you remove the part and bring it in I can look it up on the computer and find the right one for your vehicle.

Me- Well is that what the computer is for.

Dealer- Sir I can not look up your part till you bring it in.

Me- OK so let me get this straight -at this point I am screwing with the guy- you want me to drain my trans. oil and drive my car down here so I can bring in a gallon oil trans. oil and then you can sell me new stuff???

Dealer- Yea

At that point I just put both oils down and told the guy he was a F***ing idiot and that he is proof there is still jobs for the retards of america. I got nothin against retards but the guy has no clue and does not need to be working a parts counter.

Hey ffhofer,

Is that the same dealer that told you a drain and fill is good enough? Hmm!

That does suck though. I know there is no way our parts guys would do that. They would find the answer on the computer or found someone who would know the answer before you left.

Actually it is my over 14 years experience as a mechanic for Caterpillar and we hire alot of guys that used to work at dealerships and I have heard alot of horror stories of how dealers rip people off and a tranny. flush is one way when it is not neccasary. I located the service manual and recommends drain and fill only. And for you guys using the toyota type IV oil that is NOT what is recommened for a TC Scion. The service manual says ONLY Toyota Genuine ATF WS. And use either part number JWS3324 or NWS9638. Also found out there is no filter to change but it is a mesh screen that is easily cleaned with brake cleaner but the filter is designed to last the life of the unit so there is no need to drop the drain pan.

Ok, maybe there was some miscommunication. I assumed that someone asking about trans service had an automatic with type IV fluid. Thats what I get for assuming.

Manual trans - drain and fill ( GL-5)
autos 2005-06 type IV (we flush)
autos 2007-09 WS No flush. check at 100,000 miles.

I have never flushed a WS trans during any regular service. I did flush a couple Tundras with WS because they got a service somewhere else and got the wrong fluid put in it.

the big question is.. to drain the fluid after it's been driven, or when cold?

Is it true - that ATF WS - not have to be changed during life of trany?

Is Toyota ATF-WS compatible with Toyota T-IV fluid
Answer:
Toyota ATF-WS (World Standard) Automatic Transmission Fluid used in certain 2004-2008 vehicles is NOT compatible with Toyota T-IV or Dexron ATF. WS ATF was introduced to reduce maintenance costs and increase the mileage between scheduled maintenance checks. The recommended maintenance interval for INSPECTION is 100,000 miles; ATF-WS does NOT require any flushing or changing during the life of the vehicle.

Okay guys, I was about to get my ATF changed and flushed and all that HOWEVER.....I just stopped at home to replace my windhsield washer fluid and noticed on the dipstick to the ATF it says "No need to replace ATF fluid under normal operating conditions"

So, my dear friends....I am open to comments on this....to change or not to change?

Yeah, the new WS fluid does not need changed.

But, it can't hurt... I did mine at 20K and will again at 40k. For under $20, why not. It is easier then a basic oil change... Pull the plug, let drain, replug (I torqued to 30ft/lbs), and refill with 3.5qts of W.S fluid through dipstick tube. Easy as that!

It does not hurt to change it out every 30, 45, 50k miles... Just do what you find fit. It will be fine either way.
