Default VSC/Trac/CE lights - Error code p012 "Camshaft..."

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me with this:

Twice since I purchased my '05 xB (20K miles) I have had the VSC, Trac Off, and Check Engine lights come on simultaneously while driving. No appearant change in the vehichle, no noises or shudders that might indicate something structural, no leaks or loose caps/items. Each time I took it into a Toyota dealership (different ones, to see if one could find something the other missed), and was told that "Error code p012" came up on the diagnostic. This is listed as "Camshaft Position Retarded" in their systems, but neither dealership could find anything wrong. One suggested that I or the previous owner may have messed with the timing for some reason (not true). Both shops eventually told me that nothing was wrong, they cleared the error and sent me on my way.

The lights have since come back again, so there is obviously something causing this recurring error. I have found four other threads discussing similar situations:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...+engine+lights
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...=28567&start=0
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...645&highlight=
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...vsc+trac+wheel

... but I wanted to start this thread specifically to ask about this error code, and anyone else that has run into it. Has anyone out there had any luck getting this matter cleared up? Does anyone know what I should ask the dealership to look for/at?

Thanks!

Mike

i have the same code intermittently throw and then self-correct. after it self-corrects, I get the code pulled again, and it's in fact clear. I strongly suspect the sensor, but have yet to give the monkeys my car for a week.
