someone reccomended a diluted vinegar bath (also safe for paint, but make sure you wash and wax after)

I had the same problem a few months ago. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it --- by waxing the window (mine was the sunroof). Hope it helps.

i recently used the clay bar on my windshield. oh yummy yummy! Crystal clear and I swear the rain seems to shoot right off, like it's got Rain-X on it or something!

Clay bar - definitely my most fave car accessory.

tell this much: Glass chemistry is ancient. Alkali attacks some constituents of glass, making it "sick glass" (milky) You've seen this in window glass subject to rain splash-back from nearby concrete pavement. The lime ruins the glass surface over time, etching it to a fog.

The only cure is mechanical polishing.

Now, on the other hand: acidic substances protect glass... or rather, do not etch it

If a car is used in an area where alkali dusts are in the roadways, by all means: a vinegar glass cleaner is a good thing to use. Kill that alkali that may be lurking in the micro pores of your glass.

It is safe to polish windshield glass about as much as you like with glass resto. kits because the WS is not temerped glass, but plain. Minor fogging and minor haze are easily removed by pressure and wet lapping with the rotary buff and special polishing compound. Deep scraches will be improved, but not removed. They only smear.

Rhetorical question again: what is tempered glass and how and why is it stronger against blunt impact force than plain glass?

Didn't know tempered glass was stronger than plain or float glass. But I'll take an educated guess at the answer. The process of tempering re-arranges the structure of the glass so that it breaks into pebble size pieces vs sharp slivers etc. I'd venture to guess that the bonds between the pebble size pieces of tempered glass is stronger than ordinary glass. Heating crystaline materials can do some strange things to their structure. If interested look up 'metamic' minerals or crystals.

And you asked a rhtorical question??
