Default What is this Engine Rattle??????

Okay....just in the last couple weeks wheenever I am sitting at a light the engine starts this really loud rattling. It goes away when I'm in park but when I am at a stop the rattling starts back up. I looked at the engine and it is shaking like a leaf when the brake is engaged and its idling.....any ideas what this could be???
Thanks!

Mine does this too. It almost sounds like an exhaust hanger rattling, but the funny part is the harder i get on it the less noise it makes.

I know this is probably an obvious thing, but my air box was rattling real loud when the car was in drive, but in park it was fine.

I thought there was a TSB on a rough idle.

Default engine rattle

I checked the hood....and the A/C I think it started when I started using the A/C....now it just continues....when I look under the hood (while girlfriend has car in drive with break on) the engine itself is just rattling back and forth! I have a mechanic checking into the trouble and will let you guys know if he can fix it....till then....keep me posted if anyone finds out what the heck started this thing.

Mine turned out to be two things. 1) I put a zip tie on the fuel line to pull it away from the Strut tower bar, that reduced it but didn't eliminate it. 2) The dealer noticed the air cleaner housing was loose, tightened up a few clamps and presto, no more noise!

I'm not sure if you're hearing what I am, but it concerned me until I read the owner's manual. If I recall, the idle sound I hear is related to the 'stability control' making adjustments. Give it a look - may put your mind at ease.

Like Spider13, mine also sounded like an exhaust hanger rattling. I only noticed it the first week I owned my car though. It dosent make the noise anymore. I've never had it serviced yet, since I've only had it for 2 months, so I wouldn't know where to begin as to tell you what was "wrong" with it. All I know is that it "fixed" itself and I'm not complaining.

i had a annoying rattle like what is being talked about. well, after many days of searching i thought it was coming from the engine, but it was actually the fog lights. i promise if you get those held down tight (maybe some duct tape) the rattle will go away

my car also had an annoying rattle, that I fixed. there was a plate of sorts that is basically under the car directly between the drivers and passenger seats. the bolts had wiggled loose. I think it is kind of a skid plate/exhaust support mechanism. gl

alot of it is that it's a weak little 4cylinder with an auto. keeping it in drive is making the motor work hard cuz the tranny is still partially engaged. maybe a tsb for the tranny for the roughness? the sound and vibration are from that roughness . most manuals dont have this problem
or only have it while using ac at idle.
