Default Wheel Bearings are Humming

I've noticed this humming sound probably a few hundred or even thousands miles ago. I never really noticed it because I was usually had my music loud enough to drown the road noise. Anyways I talked to a mechanic while getting a state inspection and he agrees it's the wheel bearings.

I have 59,787 miles on my xB, does powertrain warranty cover this or is this a normal wear and tear. I never had to change a wheel bearing on my other cars with over 100k miles on it. So is this a premature wear and tear or is it because I driven this car to it limits.

Yeah I admit I haul close to 1k pounds of magazines I had to deliver twice over 100 plus miles. I have drive my xb over a ford which the water was right at the side skirts of the box. I've also had 19 inch wheels on it for a year because it was a dealer demo and yeah a dealer demo, everyone in town and everyone at the dealership drove this box till 11k miles.

So, how hard is it to change the wheel bearings? Do I have to change all four sides? Does both front and rear wheels have inner and outer bearings? Do I need to change the CV boot? Is there such things as a higher grade of aftermarket wheel bearings?

I guess the worst thing I heard that can happen is that my wheels would fall off eventually, is that true?

sad thing is the wheel bearing is a seal unit and it isn't serviceable and have to replace the whole unit instead of just the bearings pretty sucky imo

the front has a front axle hub bearing along with a replaceable snap ring

the rear comes as a rear axle hub and bearing assembly

doing the rears will be easy the front i would let some body else to do it...

i wouldn't really trust some thing you'll find at the junk yard for bearings, never know what your gonna get...

The front wheel bearings cost $30 ea. and the rear hub assembly cost $300 some ea. This is wacked cuz parts alone would add up to about $800. Sad thing is that I now have little over 60k miles.

I heard the front bearings need to be pressed, can someone elaborate on this one. I am guessing it needs to be pressed to the hub assembly right? How hard can this be, has anyone done this yet?

I have jacked up my car and shooked each wheel and they're tight, nothing loose there.

What else can make this humming sound. It doesn't make a difference when I turn, so I guess the CV joints are ok right? The humming noise varies depending on the speeed, pretty much either when i'm slowing down or cruising above 25mph. At higher speed of course the road noise drowns out some, but I know it's there since I know how a new xb sounds like.

I guess i'm going to wait till a wheel falls off j/k.

Take it to toyota and see if they'll cover it as a "gesture". The factory warranty is 5/60k isn't it? if they say no call up toyota and tell them its been like that for the last 5k miles and you're real disappointed in the wheel bearings going out. Thats like Ford quality right?

The warranty deadlines have some flexibility in them, but Toyota corporate can make that call. The point is to get it into the dealership and tehn ask them to see if they can make an exception. It'll only cost you their diagnostic fee to see if Toyota will save you $800.

Is the humming more pronounced when you slow down? Sound like you're driving on studded snow tires? If so, It would indicate bearings. I had to have mine replaced with only 30k on my xb. 6 months after being repaired, the humming is coming back. I'll be taking to the dealership in the next few days. I'll keep y'all posted.

Well, I took it in yesterday. Went to pick it up and the only thing they found was that my front tires were over filled. So, I got in the car, made it out of the lot and turned right back around. After alot of BS about how "aggresive" my Fuzion treads are and general tire care, I finally got the mechanic to ride with me. He's going to put another set of tires on it today and drive it to see if it still does this. He said that he ruled out the bearings because the were replaced 6 months ago. I said that they shouldn't have needed to be replaced at 30K, either. Maybe this is indicative of a larger problem. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

Well, I found out putting about 50k miles on Kumho Ecstas made this humming noise as I got closer to wearing out the treads.

If it's a wheel bearing problem you'd hear a hum getting worse at higher speeds and coming from one wheel. It's very unlikely that all 4 wheels had bearings go bad at the same time. you only need to change the one going bad, if that's what the problem is. 60k is much faster than average but not unheard of for front bearings, the rear bearings shouldn't be going bad yet.

Usually when Wheel Bearings are going bad it will moan when you go around a turn.
