Wierd noise when braking/slipping? ABS?

Wierd noise when braking/slipping? ABS?
I've never driven a car with ABS as i think my 2005 xA has, anyway...
it snowed here and whenever i hit the brakes and my car starts to slide or slip, i start hearing a "twanging" or "panging" type noise coming from under the car. i have no clue what the hell is going on. its the sound an acoustic guitar makes when u pull back the low E string all the way and just let it snap back.
i've been driving my scion for more than 5k miles and this is the first time this has happened.
anyway know whats going on?
