All you have to do is to kneed the clay until its white again. Unless you have hard chunks in your clay ie:dropping it on the ground, you should thrpw the whole piece away. its better to be safe then sorry. I usually do the soapy water method when i clay. I have the hose in hand to wash off the dirty water and to keep things moist.

I keep the surface wet by using detail spray.

You don't need to keep the car wet after claying. Clean it right after claying.

Wash your car after you clay it. Strong hose then wash, then wax. You do NOT keep the clay on the car. Do a google search on how to use a claybar on your car. You'll get all the information you need.

Here's one web site that explains how to use a clay bar.

When I was using the claybar to remove the bugs earlier this week, what I did was spray detail spray, then rub the clay bar until it felt like it was gliding over the area, then wipe off the spray with a microfiber towel, look at the bug spots and repeat until they were gone.

I managed to get almost all the bug stuff off my car, not sure what to do about the remaining, as the bug off stuff I bought didn't work nearly as well as the clay bar.

I clayed my hood and roof tonight, then a coat of Meguiars NXT wax. This was the first claying in several months for the hood, and the first ever for the roof. The difference is pretty amazing.

Smooth as glass.

Dumb question: Does clay take off wax?

clay does not take off wax. alcohol mixed with water or dawn dish soap will take off wax. clay sorta acts like a pencil eraser, it picks up all the gunk on the surface of your clearcoat

Thanks.

I was curious for future use, I didn't want to take off any wax, but it's good to know. Once I get my garage, I'll strip everything and get a fresh start. For now, I'm loving my finish. Over a year outside, and no swirls, just the rock chips on the lower bumper.

If you are using clay to get a rally smooth finish and prep for a good waxing, do the following.

First, wash your car thoroughly with DAWN dishwashing soap. This takes wax off, the clay will also remove wax.

Then, follow the instructions we've provided you here, watch the step-by-step, with the clay.

Then, wash your car again to remove all residual clay.

Then you are ready to lay down your wax.

Dude, if you still don't understand how to use clay after reading the advice here, after reading the step by step, after watching the video, don't use it.

I found it to be necessary to wash the surface after claying.

I've never seen any clay residue, perhaps you're not keeping it wet enough. My Mother's kit said not to use water, but to use detail spray. I wipe the area with a microfiber towel after claying so the detail spray doesn't dry on it, then wax afterwards. Claying DOES remove wax, it basically removes all the stuff built up on the surface of the paint. But better to strip the wax with the wash.

DON'T wash with dawn or any other DISH liquid!!!! any good car wash will remove wax......dawn and whatnot will promote fading of the paint over time....also, good quality car soaps contain lubricants to cut down on swirl marks....

Most car wash soaps I've seen don't cut the wax. If they did, you'd have to wax after every wash.
