2 Killed In Possible Drag Race Crash
1 Still In Critical Condition
POSTED: 11:23 am EDT June 21, 2009
UPDATED: 12:31 pm EDT June 22, 2009

BALTIMORE -- Maryland State Police and hospital officials said a 22-year-old Elkridge man injured in a chain-reaction crash that killed two people has been released from the hospital, but another man remains in critical condition.

State police spokesman Sgt. Arthur Betts said Monday that investigators are looking into whether 26-year-old Donneil Raeburn of Pikesville was drag racing before the crash on Interstate 70.

Shock Trauma spokeswoman Cindy Rivers said Raeburn is listed in critical condition.

Rivers said 22-year-old Paul Duffy of Elkridge was treated for serious injuries and released.

The crash killed 21-year-old Mary-Kathryn Abernathy of Columbia, and 20-year-old Jonathan Henderson of La Plata. Both were hit as they stood next to Henderson's car on the shoulder of I-70. Duffy was standing by his car nearby when he was hit. "It's just so tragic, we're just trying to figure out all that's happened."
- Paul Toman

The crash occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators believe alcohol may have contributed to the crash, but charges have not been filed, Betts said.

The deaths follow a gruesome accident in February 2008 in which eight people were killed when a car crashed into a crowd that had gathered along Route 210 in Accokee, about 20 miles south of Washington. Two men were charged in that case, which prompted increased patrols near popular racing sites.

Betts said it's difficult to eliminate street racing.

"They're still out there. We know they are," Betts told The Washington Post, adding two state police patrols had been through the area an hour before the crash.

Paul Toman, Henderson's stepfather, said Henderson and Abernathy had been dating for six months and "spent all of their time together."

"They were inseparable," Toman told the Post.

"It's just so tragic, we're just trying to figure out all that's happened."

Also on Sunday, one person died after his car, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck a business in Dundalk, police said. Another person died when a motorcycle crashed on the beltway near White Marsh. The motorcycle accident happened at about 8 a.m. on the Inner Loop near the exit for Interstate 95 White Marsh. Police said the motorcycle clipped a truck and then lost control. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle and died from his injuries.

Something like that happened a few months ago near me. The bad part is nobody was ever caught. Yet another reason not to street race.

here is the story-

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Street racing led to a young man's death along I-664 in Chesapeake according to investigators. The race ended in a crash late Monday night near the Dock Landing Exit.

State Police say two men were thrown from their car after it rear-ended another car broken down on the shoulder. The 17 year-old girl inside that car was also badly hurt in the crash.

State Police confirmed one of the men involved in the crash died before 12:30 Tuesday afternoon. The condition of the other man in the car hasn't been released.

The 17 year-old's boyfriend tells WAVY.com his girlfriend is talking and is in good spirits, but she is preparing for surgery.

Investigators say around 9:45 Monday night, witnesses saw a Ford Mustang, a Dodge Charger, and a Chevy Impala racing northbound on Interstate 664, traveling between 90 and 100 miles an hour. The posted speed limit is 55 mph along that stretch.

At one point, according to State Police, the driver of the Impala drove onto the shoulder, trying to pass a slower vehicle. The Impala smashed into a red Honda. Inside sat a 17 year-old girl who pulled over because her car had broken down.

The Honda was pushed into the woods nearby, while the Impala skidded across two lanes of traffic and flipped upside down in the median throwing both men from the car according to officials.

One investigator says the impact between the Impala and the Honda was so severe, the speedometer cable snapped, causing the pin to freeze at 90 miles per hour in the Impala.

At the scene Tuesday, friends of the two men in the Impala were looking for answers. They all wanted to know how their friends were doing and they tried to piece together what happened.

Shortly after speaking with them, 10 On Your Side learned one of the men thrown from the Impala died in the hospital. Along the road lies the remains of the Chevy and the Honda.

Investigators say the 17-year-old victim has a lot of healing to do after suffering two broken legs, a broken hip, and broken ribs.

Her boyfriend tells WAVY.com she remembers nothing from the accident, except pulling over onto the shoulder and then waking up at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Police say the Mustang and Charger kept driving after the accident happened and the drivers were not caught. No word yet on what charges may be filed."

This is why I don't street race period.

My grandmother lost a boyfriend in highschool to street racing. That's all the motivation I need.

It's still tragic but could have easily been prevented..regardless RIP and I hope the family and friends of the victims are going to be ok.
