Default anyone know about cameras?

I got a canon a720 IS for college, and i'm really getting into taking pictures. BUT. I'm starting to want to invest in a lens.
A) is it worth it?
B) if so, what's good? what makes lenses good?

help is greatly appreciated.
I realize it's not a SLR, if you suggest for me to get one, you clearly didn't read this well enough. COLLEGE.
btw, cheap would be nice

thanks much SL!

i wouldnt but lenses for that camera, cuz they're gonna be cheap screw on type lenses which typically don't have very good glass

if you really want to get into photography, pick up a DSLR

You can get used DSLR for cheep used. Those are not really worth buying lenses for. If money is a problem you can use old lenses from old film SLRs. I believe cannons are backward compatible really well.

All DSLRs can use film SLR lenses.

That is not exactly true. I am a nikon guy and I have a D50, I thought about the d40x but it definatly has lens limatations. The D60 also has lens limatations. But Yes their are a lot of lenses that are old for SLRs that will work depending on what you want to do.

All lenses work, Just on the D40 or D60, they don't have the built in focus motor.

They still technically work, just have to manual focus them lol

Like most have said, don't buy lenses for that camera. I actually started with the same camera, A720, and it's a good camera on its own even though its a point and shoot. If you want to invest money, get a Canon Rebel XT, they now have the XS and XSi out which should start to bring down the price of the XT. But start trying the manual setting and anything besides auto on the A720 before you actually buy a DSLR. Cuz they really aren't worth the money if you're gonna shoot in auto all the time.
