Default calling all bartenders!

when a cocktail recipe calls for lets say 6 parts vodka, how much is that in terms of ounces? or even better, what would one "part" be in terms of ounces?

I think it is that a part is a shot. At least that is what I assume whilst making cocktails.

I did look it up a bit on Google but didn't find anything right off the bat so I stopped.

What you making?

"Parts" usually means shots. Chances are the recipe is making more than one martini at a time. Put it in a shaker with some ice and see how it tastes. And make sure you aren't using crappy vodka, or no matter what you put in it, it will taste like crap.

And you're only 17!?! Shouldn't you be drinking yager and cheap beer?

good lord i hate beer. never had yager. and technically vodka should not have a "taste" per se. it is a neutral spirit. :D at least i sure as hell cant see the difference in a "good" vodka or a "cheap" one

If you get a good vodka, it should have a taste. You want to taste the vodka, but make it so that you don't get the after taste. I'd recommend Effen vodka to start with, as it's only around $25 for a bottle, but still has a good taste to it.

Yes, the recipe is for many and not just one person. I don't think there is any cocktail that calls for 6 parts of just one thing.

And tsk tsk, 17 year old boy!

Technically a vodka should not have a taste. It may feel different as it goes down, but it should not taste unless it is a flavored vodka. To see this try putting two different kinds of vodka in two separate clear glasses and chill them. Then drink them, you should not be able to taste the difference. I use stolichnaya in the drinks i make. I have used grey goose which supposedly is the best in the world and its all the same to me.

You can easily taste the difference between 2 different types of vodka. You're 17, of course you can't tell the difference between a good vodka and a cheap vodka. Ask anyone that has any sort of experience with vodka and they will tell you that you can taste a difference between Grey Goose and Stoli.

And Grey Goose is good, but definitely far from best in the world. I found that out after \going to a vodka bar and asking for the best vokda they had. It was a night and day difference and so was the price tag. I don't even want to say how much it was for that drink, because even I feel like an idiot after paying for it

Parts are just equal amounts. If you wanted to you could use a whole gallon as 1 part if you really wanted to, but every time it called for 1 part it would be a whole gallon.

the bar method is if you do not have the hour glass measurer then count to 6 at normal speed and that is roughly 6 parts, but that is also with the bottle top pourer.

What he said. It's just the ratio and you adjust for the amount you want to make, one shaker, one glass, on pitcher, etc.

And yes, there is a difference in Vodka flavors. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. Me, as long as it comes in a glass bottle, I'm in....except with Smirnoff I'm very wary of how much I drink....morning time is where you notice the biggest difference But my girl on the other hand, can't stand any Vodka except Belvidier (sp?). And I promise you, you can go behind the bar, and make 2 drinks identical except for the Vodka, and she'll notice her's is not the right one.

Vodka is my main spirit so I had to interject a bit. This is as "technically correct" as it is incorrect. The way my Russian friends explained it to me, while it is a neutral spirit, it should have no flavor in relation to the scent. But vodka itself has taste. And the better it is, the less you can catch an aroma. This is why it seems "flavorless" compared to other spirits. And expensive vodkas are very easily recognized in comparison to cheap ones. It is similar to tasting tap water vs. spring water. The difference in taste is obvious even though there is no distinctive flavor. But awesome astuteness regarding liquor. The responsible and knowledgeable attitude means you are probably less likely to become an alcoholic.

Taste test Crystal Palace and Stoli. You'll see a difference.

A part is a part - doesn't matter how much it is just so long as every part is the same amount.

e.g.
2 parts redbull
1 part jag

A part can be a shot or a gallon - just depends on how much you want to make.
