DETROIT -- Scion is getting a little deviant and somewhat more metal in marketing its 2008 xD.

The younger-skewing Toyota subcompact has created an ultraviolent online game called Little Deviant while also embracing rock and metal music to launch its latest model.

Located at littledeviant.com, the game features creatures called deviants traveling through a city in search of sheeple (a person with a herd-ish mentality) to destroy.

A 60-second cinema spot, launched last week, shows the deviants riding into a town in an xD. They then consume and terrorize the sheeple. Attik, San Francisco, handles.

The campaign has already garnered attention, albeit from theater owners, some of which refuse to put up the cardboard standees in the lobbies. They deemed them "too scary," sources said.

The aggressive theme of the game and the foray into metal music suits Scion, said Simon Needham, co-founder and group creative director at Attik. "Scion is a night time, dark brand, and the aggressive side of it seems to be a nice fit for the xD. That is unusual for a car company, but it interests more people than just the usual thing."

Scion will look to partner with rock and metal acts, per a source. Merchandise for the xD, which hits dealerships in August, includes sandals, wristbands and guitar picks, all emblazoned with images of sheeple and deviants.

In the past, Scion has relied heavily on trance, hip-hop and electronica music as part of its advertising and marketing efforts. "By associating the xD with rock music, Scion seems to be attempting to give the car a more 'bad boy' image than the [previous] xA ever had," said Darren Seeman, founder of Scionlife.com, a Web site frequented by 30,000 Scion owners and fans. (The site is not affiliated with Toyota.)

Scion spent $9.3 million on ads through April, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Last year's spend was $30 million. Coming off a record 173,000 unit sales last year, per Autodata, Woodcliff Lake, N.J., Scion has faded somewhat as Toyota cuts back production. It expects to sell around 150,000 cars this year.

So, they are going to admit they have a 3rd model?.....sure hope it gets more support than the xA ever got.

But, it doesn't really look like it will... the new xB2 got the cross country backstage event, the xD gets a 60 second commercial that looks stupid.

the xd was mentioned or at all of the backstage events

i think the xd will be very popular and i hope it trumps the xB2 as far as sales go

i did think it was weird for ll its website to be was about killing things lol.

much better than want2bsquare.com which is bad because the new xB is NOWHERE near square and the site was pretty hard to navigate.

I'm just glad they're gearing towards rock rather than hip-hop and techno.

It has sucked horribly since about '96. Even the rappers I like have been somewhat pathetic.

while my opinion of the xB2 is totally opposite of yours you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it.

that is all.

I don't like bloated pigs of a car.

if they had just given it a new model name i wouldn't mind it at all. i still wouldn't particularly like it but it wouldn't be the abomination of the name xB like I feel that it is.

Aside from the deviant campaign the xD comes across as an afterthought to the Scion brand.

the xD wasn't readily available in physical form early on in the tour having only one or two examples to choose from . unlike the xB which was only a few months away from being released , the xD was more than 3 months away , the xB as little as one month.

the thing is that they think the xB will carry the brand cause it was the surprise seller the first time around . the xa was originally though to outsell the xB.

the scion backstage is not a new xB only tour , it;s the scion backstage event,

covering the xD and the xB
