thanks for explaining tomas. i didnt know that. and to rcz and torched i see ur guys point ur right. i should of called the police when it did happen. when it did i was like " do i call 911?no one got hurt and etc"(im an idiot). and when i intially looked at it, it looked like a bumper and i was like well i work at the dealer,no biggie. figures i drop off my gf ,leave it in the garage all day sunday.bring it to work on monday, and the actual damages are alot more than a bumper. im sure i screwed myself bc now the police report has pics of my car,but not the pile and was after the actual incident. i wish i went on my cell and went on scionlife before i drove off.ha. thanks so far guys, ia ppreciate it

No big deal.. it's only a small mistake

Keep it in mind though if there is a next time. And your welcome. Let us all know what comes of the situation. If they make you pay, keep an eye out for another pile and ream the shte out of it, but stop this time. lol

Just sit in the car and when the cop comes tell him you have pain in your neck.

Then you can get a nice claim going for whiplash. The city will be pwnd, lol

Couple things.

1) If you ever hit something that's standing completely still on a highway, you're at fault because you had time to react. But here in California, if you're driving on a highway or something & a ladder falls off a truck & hits it, then they're at fault because it's something that's moving, I believe the same goes for animals running in the road, etc.

2) You mentioned you're getting the whole car repainted, so why don't you just scrounge up the couple hundred bucks, get a new bumper, & repaint the car as you had planned?

3) Lastly, as per your title's question, no you didn't do the right thing, as mentioned, you should've stopped right when it happened & then called the police.

It is how you learn or at least it is how I learn: the hard way.

Yes it is your fault for hitting it, but it should have never been there in the first place. It is not like you ran into the back of a car at a red light.
Someone is responsible for dumping a pile of salt on the road and not taking care of it. I am sure the road crews have to report things like that and not leave them on the road for motorists to hit.

And you would be surprised how cheep insurance companies are and how driven they are at getting money. The fact that they are investigating it trying for money sounds like that they believe someone else is responsible too.

Now the good thing is that you only paid $500 for this and not the full amount. You might have just stuck your insurance company with the bill for not reporting it right after it happened. But at least you reported it in time. The police can charge you for reporting an accident too late.

But now you know for next time. Glad to hear you are ok and everything is working out.

Well we have alot of posters or i dunno how u call it. big collages of all the car shows like sema in our showroom. our dealer likes to pretend to promote modifying. the sema one is right in front of our door and there is a huge pic of ur tc. so thats the first thing people see. like i tell people here most people come here and DONT want to modify,i tell them about scionlife and they look at me funny. everytime someone walks in there like " A PINK TC?OMGall the girls are age are like im going to do that!".i'm like u guys dont realize how much time and effort is put into that.the other half of the people are like " EWWW"and i get defensive and im like "r u kiddin ME?!!"

I think it depends on the situation, I mean what if the salt had JUST spilled like 10 mins earlier? How is CalTrans going to be notified right away? I think it's fair for them to have a certain amount of time (though nobody would ever know how long it was REALLY there) to clean it up. However, 4 years ago when I had my civic, I hit a pothole in the road, & it was definitely a city cut pothole cuz it was a perfect rectangle, & it was about a foot wide & 8 inches deep. I bent 2 of my rims like crazy, & it literally sliced through the tires. The tow truck driver told me I was the 7th car that day that had to be towed due to that pothole. I called the city & they sent me paperwork. I filled it out saying it was due to city negligence & they sent me a check for the cost of the wheels & tires. Plus, the pothole was right after a hill & I didn't see it & it was 100% due to city negligence since they performed the work. As for the salt in the road, he had the time to react. How long was he in the lane that had the salt in it for? I don't know, if it was a short amount of time, he should've looked a little down the lane before merging into it to make sure it's safe anyway.

There's definitely been way TOO much time, money, & effort into my tC, & it's not even done.
