I did a ginger Porter a year or so ago. Grated fresh root into the secondary. I liked it a lot, but a few of my friends were a bit shocked when I busted out a twelver of that stuff. A few more:

- Amber Ale: had fresh habanero(sp) and jalapeno peppers.
- Pumpkin Pie Porter: Actually brewed 2.5 gallons in 2 hollow pumpkins then blended it with the remaining 2.5 gals. Added pumpkin pie spices as well.
- Red Ale infused w/ sage.
- Fenugreek and maple syrup Stout with added jaggery.
- Anise Stout.............

I could go on for days, but Im sure you are begining to see the picture.

Yeah, I might just do a gallon of the garlic. 5 gals (~50 12oz bottles) sounds like a lot like overkill to me.

Im not a big fan of Domestics....the few that come to mind are Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger and Anchor Steams Steam Beer. Bud/Miller/Coors.....I wouldnt use them clean dog sh*t off the bottom of my shoe, let alone actually ingest them.
Wow, I may have to try all of these! you seem like a true enthusiast!
Enthusiast is a good word. Ive traveled to Belgium and visited some famous Abbeys in part to get my hands on some properly stored beer. I also went to The Kulminator in Antwerp just because they have a beer menu the size of a phone book….no joke either. Thousands of bottles reside in the cellar. So maybe enthusiast is not the right word…maybe madman is better.

Additionally, as you may have guessed by my name, I brew my own beer as well.

Pliny the Elder is a double IPA. Awesome! Heavy malt aroma and mouth are present to balance this extremely hoppy beer. For hopheads only! Simcoe and Amarillo are the prominent hop aromas. The Younger is like the Elder, but a triple IPA that clocks in at about 11%. Take your time with this beer. Both are made by Russian River.

Everything else on my list is from Belgium and if you have never had the Belgiums, start with the Abbey ales as they are more accessable thab the Sours and Lambics, which are in a league of their own. None are inexpensive, so single bottles are a wise choice ($4- $8 per 11.2 oz btl)
Hey man thanks for the advice! I'd LLOOVVEE to try your brews!! II'd like to get into home brewing myself and would also kil to travel the world in search of beers!
CHEERS!

Oh, and I highly recommend www.allagash.com
Allagash brews some decent treats.

If you are ever in SoCal, drop me a line. I like making them more than drinking them, so I have quite the stash built up (200+ bottles). I don’t do typical beers though..if I want a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, I will go out and buy one. So I tend to bit a bit more creative. You cant buy things like:

-

IBA: A cross between an IPA and a Stout. Its is basically a Stout hopped like an IPA. Flavored with a hint of rosemary and sage

An Imperial Stout aged on whiskey soaked oak chips…took 2nd place at the local homebrew competition.

A Dry Stout aged on vanilla and cocoa beans, spiced with cinnamon and coriander…..took 1st!

An IPA infused with lavender and wormwood…..a crowd favorite!

Pomegranate Mead, aging on fresh blueberries as we speak.

-

Screw the German Purity laws…again, I take big chances and get wild with my brews.
One of these days I am going to brew a garlic beer, but even I havent got the nerve yet. At least it would go good with pizza!

As far as traveling goes, if you are looking for just the beer experience, Belgium is the country. Oktoberfest is a bigger party, but lacks the refinement of Brugge, Ghent or Antwerp IMO. That said, Ive been to about 13 countries and have had a great time in them all, even if the beers were crappy…..hell, even the worst beers Ive had in Europe are still not as horrid as a domestic Miller/Sewers/Buttwiper.

Traveling > Beer
Good God! You're beers sound fantastic!
I've always found the more odd the beer, the more I seem to like it.

I'm from Harrisburg, PA and there are 2 really good microbrews around here

1. Troegs (Hopback, Nugget Nectar, Troegenator Double Bock) are really really good

2. Appalachian Brewing Company (really good, Water Gap Wheat, Zoigl, Mountain Lager, Scottish Ale)

those 2 are some of my faves but you can't go wrong with Red Stripe, Yuengling, Tequiza, Sam Adams

Thanks man!

Yeah, the many nuances of beer is just incredible. 100s of different styles, each with their own personalities. I critique beer the same way some do wine....when I go out with new people and they see me swirilling my beer around my snifter to release the volatile oils which permeate the nose, my explaination of the flavors and bouquet, well lets just say I have gotten some odd looks.

The ignorant part is that some understand that for judging wine, but think it does not apply to beer.

Anyway, when I hear someone say they dont like beer, I tell them that that is the same thing as saying they dont like food. There is a style of beer for everyone, and matching the propper beer to food is an art into itself. IPAs go wonderful with bleu cheeses, and Stouts go with oysters.....

I couldn't agree more. People don't seem to understand how refined, and classy beer can be, I mean, how sophisticated of a taste and palette there is out there. I just read a great article somewhere about beer and cheese pairings, I've actually wanted to throw a beer and cheese party for quite some time now.

1. Ayinger Celebrator

2. Corsendonk Dubbel

3. Chimay Blue

4. Chimay Red

The Ayinger and Corsendonk are far and away my favorites, though nearly impossible to get here--I usually have to go two counties away and special order them.

Either Chimay is fine when out at dinner...and much more readily available (almost to easy to find--becoming "common" )

Shiner Bock
Sam Adams - Pilsner and the Scotish brews, hate the lager
Boddingtons
Bass
Guiness
Lone Star - bottles or keg only
Fat Tire - Keg only
Buff Gold

Being in one of the armpits of the gulf I am not privy to the array of beer I had back in Austin, but there were some good brews out there.

Favorite beer?

:D THE NEXT ONE!

No one said it so it had to be done.
I'm gonna go with Corona and Blue Moon. Anything you can add a slice of citrus with makes it my kind of beer.

Anyone tried barons black wattle?

http://www.baronsbrewing.com.au/beer...lackwattle.php

I cant find it anywhere and I hear its mighty fine.
