Default Geo quiz!

OK, here's a question that came up among friends:

What is the easternmost point in the USA (all 50)?
Yes, it is a trick question, but answer will amaze your friends!

West Quoddy Head, ME claims to be the Eastern Most point in the US. I have a problem with that. First off, there is an East Quoddy Head. Shouldn't that be east of West Quoddy Head? More importantly, St. Croix claims to be the Easternmost point in the US, and they are in fact east of Maine. But then there's Guam which you'll find by going even more east. And even then there's Alaska, which is East of Guam. And east of Alaska is...Maine. So clearly we need a point of reference. I pulled out the globe. If you go from the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) St. Croix is the winner. If you go from the International Date Line (45° longitude) the point at which it crosses Alaska is the winner. So what does this mean? It means the following:

* Guam is not the easternmost anything.
* St. Croix is the easternmost point in the US in the context of the prime meridian.
* The island northeast of Amchitka, Alaska is the easternmost point in the US in the context of the international date line.
* West Quoddy Head is the easternmost point in the CONTINENTAL US.

By the way, East Quoddy Head is indeed east of West Quoddy Head, but it's also in Canada.

Found here. Its all about how you look at things.

Damn, did not expect such a quick answer!
Well said and done

Yes, part of the Aleutian Islands are on the other side of the international date line which makes them the most easternmost point of our 50 states!

I got all excited when I saw this topic because I thought it was going to be a GEOlogy discussion, not geography. I'm a science nerd.

Oh well.
