Default H5N1 has mutated

Human-to-human transmission of bird flu has been confirmed in Indonesia. The mutated form of the virus is the danger that scientists expected.....
http://en.apa.az/news.php?id=10183

I didnt think this would happen until July or August of this year. The virus is evolving ahead of schedule. Not good.

I was not that concerned with H5N1 as it was only contracted by direct contact. Not anymore.

What do you think of this newest strain of H5N1?

Interesting, but WHO also said:

"All confirmed cases in the cluster can be directly linked to close and prolonged exposure to a patient during a phase of severe illness," a WHO statement said. "Although human-to-human transmission cannot be ruled out, the search for a possible alternative source of exposure is continuing."

Whith that said though, I am still a bit skeptical as to how true it REALLY is. It is coming, no doubt, but again, I am suprised with this possible earlier than expected development.

There are very many ways to die in the world...how will you?

Yeah this thing can kill millions over some amount of time. But if you think like me...(150 million lives/6 billion lives * 100 = 2.5%)... its really not that bad. Besides, back in the day there have been worse plagues.

You still have a higher risk of death by driving to work/school tommorow then you do of this virus.

I totally agree with your analogy by the way. I am planning a trip to Czech, Poland and Romania in a few months, so obviously my fear of H5N1 must not be too large.

Thing is, I am a scientist, more specifically a microbiologist. I am just truly curious as to when the mutation happens, and it is a small game we play at the lab trying to figure out what month it will happen in.

What is of concern is the combination of a cleavage site common in H5N1 isolates, coupled with a PB2 E627K polymorphism that is usually not found in birds and is almost always fatal when coupled with the H5N1 cleavage site.

W.H.O confirms the human-to-human transmission of H5N1 in Indonesia:

The only way to stop it is for us to mutate a human resistant to the bird flu. The only way that is going to happen is start procreating like mad!

Or maybe the people who all got infected in that "cluster" all were exposed to the same thing...

too many paranoid people in the world...

Don't worry, with this thing mutating like this, you most likely won't even have to pay for a JR. High trip let alone college!
