Default Help Save Saab

Here is a Premade Template to write to your congressman along with the links on how to contact them.

If you can just take 5 min to do so help save the people who made turbos possible in everyday cars like we drive

Also Pass this on to anyone you know, post in forums, etc to rally support.

Thanks

Production automobiles

The first Turbocharged diesel truck was produced by the "Schweizer Maschinenfabrik Saurer" (Swiss Machine Works Saurer) in 1938.[5]Saab was the first manufacturer to have successfully applied a turbo to regular production cars. This was made possible by the introduction of a wastegate to relieve excess pressure.[6

RE-POSTED
Whilst we can all pontificate as much as we like about possible causes and effects, what's needed this week is ACTION and the most effective action that I truly believe we can take as owners - small as it is - is contained in this post.
------
The Saab Dealer Council in the US has suggested that all US Saab owners contact their local representative in order to request that they stand up for their local businesses.
General Motors are currently 60% owned by the US Government.

Dear Senator or Representative [Name]:

As a tax paying citizen of the United States of America, and by extension a part owner of General Motors, I am contacting you in urgent request for your support in the effort to convince GM to sell Saab Automobiles AB.
It is public knowledge that Spyker Cars has submitted a bid to GM that matches their initial offer for sale as well as submitted a revised bid that eliminated all additional concerns that were raised by GM when they walked away from negotiations and announced the closure of Saab on December 18th. It is also public knowledge that Merbanco and several other companies have contacted GM with strong expressions of interest to buy Saab Automobiles AB. It is clear and evident that a buyer exists for Saab and that the failure of a sale and closure of Saab by GM is entirely unnecessary, arbitrary and unfair. The negative impact of Saab's closure by GM are numerous and significant.
  1. 218 small businesses across the US will be impaired or put out of business entirely
  2. 5,000 jobs are at risk at the dealership level across the US
  3. The US economy will lose an estimated additional 2,500 jobs that would be added back to the US dealer network after the launch of the all-new 9-5 and the 9-4X and the return of leasing to the Saab product line
  4. Close to $500 million small business assets are at risk of being impaired or liquidated
  5. Saab dealers collectively pump over $500 million into the economy annually via their business expense structure
  6. GM forced the Saab dealer network to sign a Deferred Termination Agreement this summer, which waived the dealers' rights to State franchise legal rights and remedies to dealership closure by the manufacturer. The dealers signed on the basis of expressions of GM's good faith efforts to sell Saab AB. If the dealer did not sign, they would be terminated immediately with no compensation and would not have the opportunity to be a Saab dealer after the sale of Saab was complete.
  7. Saab is not competition for General Motors. GM will not lose sales should Saab be sold and continue to produce and market their automobiles. Similarly GM will not benefit by increased sales should GM force Saab to close and go out of business. Since Saab lost its leasing facilities in July 2008, the network lost hundreds of repeat customers per dealership. Consensus among the US Saab dealers is that Audi was the overwhelming beneficiary, followed by Volvo, BMW and other European car makes. Very few if any became domestic car buyers. A few of Saab dealers are among the most successful Cadillac dealers in the country. These dealers have indicated virtually no success in converting lost Saab customers as Cadillac customers.
An alternative exists. GM clearly has a buyer for Saab. They simply need to decide to complete the sale.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please help us save this iconic brand as well as the jobs and stimulus that it provides our US economy.
Sincerely,

Customer Name

They haven't made money in years and I don't feel an inclination to help with my tax dollars. This is just the way life works. No blue ribbons for participation only.

If people actually took the time to read, this wouldn't be a issue

The plan is to SELL SAAB so that GM can get there BILLIONS of dollars for the assets that is SAAB and REPAYYYYYYYYYYYY the US Government.

HOW EVER

GM doesn't want to sell saab just like selling a car, they want rights to it and such to who ever the new owner is so they can keep on getting sourcing for there new technology with out having to fund research anything

when this post was to help write to your congressman or whome ever, it was for a forceful hand so that GM can sell saab with out any strings attached so that the US GOVERNMENT can get there money back from GM FASTER.

and BTW again, with out the history of SAAB, there would be no Turbos which is what all tuner cars such as Scions are about.

having owned a few real Saab's (pre-gm) they are not the only reason we have turbo's in cars....you need to do some research if you think that

  • 1958: The GT 750 is the first car fitted with seatbelts as standard.[34]
  • 1963: Saab becomes the first volume maker to offer diagonally-split dual brake circuits.
  • 1969: Saab creates an ignition system near the gearbox, instead of behind the steering wheel like most cars.
  • 1970: Saab introduces a world-first - headlamp wipers and washers.
  • 1971: Heated front seats are introduced, the first time in the world they are fitted as standard.
  • 1971: Saab develops the impact-absorbing, self-repairing bumper.
  • 1976: Saab was the first manufacturer to produce a turbo engine with wastegate to control boost.

  • 1983: Saab introduces the 16-valve turbocharged engine
  • 1985: Saab pioneers direct ignition, eliminating the distributor and spark plug wires.

So we should save a company because of what they did 20-60 years ago?

Saab was a good company before GM stuck it's foot in the door. The 900 and 9000 were nice cars. The 93 and 95 to come from them were pretty nice for a while. GM really started to screw with things about 2001. Saab was NEVER a line intended for large sales and only ever had 2, maybe 3 models at any given time. GM decided it wanted to increase sales and release new models. They turned to thier other product lines and released the 92-x(saabaru imprezza) and the 97 (Saab Trailblazer). the build quality was junk compared to the other 2 models. The Saabaru felt really cheaply built inside and out and the 97-x was a Trailblazer(enough said). You'll still see 95's and 93's on the streets driving around, you NEVER see any saab customer purchase a 92-x or a 97-x.

I think that GM should have sold to the swedish company that wanted them. GM has driven saab deep into the red with their terrible business practices. They need to be returned to sweden and returned to the simple company they once were.

P.S where do you think the koenigsegg came from???? Same people.

First reading this, I didn't really care that Saab was the first to run a wastegate. If they didn't do it, someone else would have figured it out in short order. The dealers I don't feel too bad for either, I'm not a fan of the dealership business model, and they know the risks of the business. They'll be stuck with the bill for the remaining inventory, but will most likely just rebrand under another manufacturer.

However, if this sale can reduce the burden to the US government and get it decoupled from GM, then I am all for it. How will this accelerate divestment from GM vs. the current termination plan?

Finally people see clearly, it will help save gm by selling the assetts rather then closing them accepting 100% loss making the loan they took from tax payers look even worse

Well since no one else did it we wouldn't know would we.

Can't go by ifs and would haves.

If that was the case, there would be a lot of things not done in the world

I owned a Saab 9-3 prior to my Scion xD. Saab is a niche brand and most Saab owners, barring the middle-aged posh women who are oblivious to their vehicles, are crazy about their cars. I would love for the brand to survive and thrive away from GM. The only thing GM did for Saab was run it into the ground. Sad. I'd own a 2001 9-3 Viggen again in a heartbeat!
