Or other sound competition events...
Do they play songs and measure the db level? Or just series of sounds with frequency variations? How does it really work? Do you have lists of songs?

depends on your event. the song based events have to be played off a cd you bought from the store (no burned copies, mp3 discs, etc).
i personally use "throw it up" by lil jon

bass notes definitely.
you wnat to find songs that have at least 30 seconds of constant bass notes.
from there, you want to find out of those that have the notes near the optimal range of your box. ported boxes do best around what they're tuned for. my sealed enclosure for my w6's does best around 43Hz.

I see. So they don't measure the clarity and fidelity of the tweeters and mid ranges?
So, to win a competition, all you have to do is make your system as loud as possible on bass without distortion and you'll be the champion?

Do you base the song on acoustics or bass surges?

I thought all CDs are digital.... like encoded with 1's and 0's.
I know it's goofy, but we use to use the Flashdance soundtrack. It's the CD they actually used to measure dB, and they use to use the same disk for every system. The main song from the movie (can't recall the name) has a deafening bass track starting about 12 or 15 sec in.
Another good one is Frankie Goes to Hollywood. It'll really show off or highlight serious flaws in your sytem all the way around.
