The 3G will not support multitasking, just the 3GS.

if I read it correctly, AT&T will release the 4G network and the iPhone 4 will support it with a carrier update and iOS update. I'm fine with 3G for now.

Seems like you don't know the difference between transferring and porting.

Incorrect, the iPhone 4 does not have an LTE frequency radio.

Well you know what transferring contacts is obviously lol. Porting is the process of retaining a number established with another carrier over to the new carrier. In my case it would involve porting 12 numbers from Verizon to AT&T. I wish I could port only 1.

Yep, family business decision...not mine. It would be an easier decision if AT&T matches the 25% discount we have with VZW.

yeah, just caught that on the Apple site "not all features compatible with all devices, multitasking 3GS & 4 only, etc. etc". Really don't understand that one other than to push people to upgrade. The 3GS isn't a general leap forward in processing power, I would think the 3G would be up to the task.

When 4G compatibility hits, I'll switch, unless there's something better w/ Android then.

The biggest difference between the 3G and the 3GS is the RAM. The 3G simply doesn't have enough memory to multitask, hell, it barely has enough memory to run a few of the apps out there. I couldn't imagine trying to multitask with my 3G.

Exactly, using backgrounder or whatever the app is called that can send apps to the background on a jailbroken iPhone causes the 3G to run sluggish as hell.

You'll be waiting for awhile, LTE won't happen on AT&T until late 2011 not to mention the iPhone 4 doesn't even support LTE nor will it. It will take an upgrade to a newer iPhone, probably Summer of 2011 or 2012, that will support the LTE frequencies.

It isn't just a software update and bam hello 4G.

Yeah, that is my assumption that Apple will release a 4G-compatible version in June 2011. And will most likely call it the iPhone 4G (goes from 3G, to 3GS, then 4 but not 4G?). My hope is that they'll open it to multi-carrier then too, since I believe Verizon's 4G will finally be in-line with the rest of the world's using the LTE-Advanced standard.

When is the AT&T exclusivity contract up? Thought it was sometime this year.

I assume that's the precise reason they didn't name it 4G, they didn't want people to assume it was 4G capable or 4G ready. Verizon will be LTE but on a different frequency so who knows if the next iPhone will have the radio for Verizon.

It was rumored that AT&T exclusivity contract expired early this year but later some documents emerged that shows AT&T inked a 5 yr exclusivity deal which would make the end date 2012, I would take that with a grain of salt.

For the first time, that I recall, AT&T is offering early upgrades to iPhone owners to renew those 2 yr contracts and lock them in. This leads me to believe that exclusivity is over and Apple is working with another carrier either T-Mobile or Verizon. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an iPhone 4 released on another carrier in the US before the year ends.

Scratch that, they won't call next years model the iPhone 4G. It will be called the iPad mini.

Okay, multi-tasking on the iphone 4 is completely superior to jailbroken backgrounding. It runs smoother, you have more options, you can run more programs...it's awesome. If you're using Pandora and you open another app, say iBook, you don't need to back out of iBook to change the song. Just double tap the home button, swipe the multi-task bar and there are all the Pandora controls.
