Default iPod sucks...help?

I got my wife a white 30 gig for her birthday and the thing sucks. It's still under warranty so we're probably going to be sending it back to Apple for a new one. The problem is that it has to be reset just about every time you turn the thing on. Either the screen goes blank white while it keeps playing music, or it just does nothing at all until you reset it. Sometimes it just flashes the dark apple then the bright apple, then dark again... She charged the hell out of it before using it and we've followed all the steps on the apple site and reset it correctly every time and we have the newest itunes but it just keeps doing this. Anybody experience something like this before?

It seems like you just got a bad one.

I've never had a problem with mine or had any friends that experienced anything other than running out of space.

When I was in the market for an Mp3 player a few of my friends had iPods. I was still rocking minidiscs and mp3 cd's. Well of the 5 or so that had iPods, only 1 of them had never needed a replacement. They had all had the same issue. Either it would stop turning on, or it would flash the screen like you are describing. After a while, they weren't holding a charge either. They tried buying a different cable and that didn't fix it. By the 5th trip in 8 months to the Apple Store for one of my friends, I decided against iPod.

I bought a Creative Zen and haven't had a single problem. I bought it a few weeks after the 30GB came out and it's been fine ever since.

I have had mine for almost a year and a half and never had a problem with mine. It's not like a have babied it either. I've beat the soup out of that thing. You can really tell mine has been used.

Have you updated it through the apple updater (which is part of itunes now) Id say restore it if you have updated and once you sync it with your itunes library it should be fine... unless its actually a problem with the ipod

Sounds like the battery or a capacitor is fried. I'd try updating it first then sending it in for a replacement.

That's not a threadjack, it's completely on topic with what's being discussed.

Is your iTunes also up to date? I know that can be an issue sometimes.

Some places actually sell returned iPods.. which people returned for the problems or people return already used or whatever.. bad policy to resell a returned mp3 player (as there was even an issue with a kid getting an iPod as a gift and when they received it, it already had adult videos on it).. but if updating software, including iTunes, and restoring it AGAIN doesn't work (please listen to suggestions it gives you).. you should probably go back to the Apple store.

I've only had my iPod freeze on me once (original 4gb iPod Nano). I went to Apple's website, found the solution in 30 seconds and my problem was fixed.. any other problems I had with it involved being in the xA and the power supplied to it going weird.. but other than that, no problems at all.

I actually don't use it anymore now since we don't have the xA.. perhaps I could sell it. /endthreadjack

So it kept being dumb and after restoring it a few times to no avail, we ended up sending the thing to Apple and they sent us a brand new one which works like a dream. All without ever having to talk to an actual person, which REALLY amazes me

for awesome customer service.

ipods do suck. at my job, i'm as close to IT as it gets, and co-workers ask seemingly easy questions, how can i get my music off my ipod's playlist and onto my desktop to burn a cd?

why o why can't ipods be just a nice easy portable harddrive + mp3 player? screw piracy protection, near everyone's using at least some illegally downloaded music on their ipods anyway.

Simple remedy: Get a Zune... I had an Ipod Nano before and I couldnt stand the thing, too many "rules and regulations"... Its my music, my video, let me do what I want with it, why I got a Zune... PLUS Zune Marketplace is SOOOOO much better than Itunes, the Zune pass is awesome, lets me download as MUCH music as I want, as long as I have a subscription... to the Zune My girlfriend is the Ipod freak, shes the apple freak in general...
