Default iPod Video vs. iPod Nano

With X-mas around the corner, I was thinkin about getting an MP3 player for my girlfriend....I was wondering which iPod was better?

I am leaning towads the 4GB Nano, but for an extra $50, I could get a 30GB iPod w/ video...but does anybody really use the video? or do people really use all 30GB? Is a Flash drive more durable than a Hard Drive? etc....

Or is the iPod overrated, and is there something better out there for $300?

I have a 40gb and use 30+ gb of it right now.

When it comes down to it, the flash drive is a little more shock resistant (working out, running, etc). But the hdd based iPods are excellent for that too.

IMO, the iPod is not overrated... it really is a great player.

What it comes down to is if you need the storage or not. Are you going to used more than 4gb? If not, get the Nano. Don't worry about the video, it won't take off for a while anyways. There isn't much content for them yet.

Thanks man....I guess I can't go wrong either way, huh?

Is it true that the batteries only last a year before having to replace them for $60? Has anyone had to do that yet?

Is the HD sturdy enought to go jogging?

Look into the iRiver U10...
http://reviews.cnet.com/iRiver_U10/4...tml?tag=viddet
Just to give you a benchmark, a standerd movie is about 300mb for the resolution of that mp3 player so you can fit about 3 movies + about 30 songs or 256 songs if you have no movies. That would definatley be enough for me but if you girlfriend needs more space I'd definatley go with the ipod video. Hope this helps!

My friend has had his black nano for about 3 weeks now also. Even though he takes very good care of it, the scratches are much more noticible on black than on white. That said, I'd still rather get black cuz it looks way better.

Personally, I think the Ipod is overrated. There are other cheaper alternatives. Just my .02

I have a black Nano and a 60 GB video iPod (white). I got the white video iPod because my black Nano DOES scratch pretty easily. Also, the black is a lot more reflective so thats the last thing i want getting in my way when i'm watching videos. The new 30 and 60 GB iPods are surprisingly slim. I had a 40GB photo and it felt like a brick compared to the 20GB photos. The new 60GB video is SLIMMER than the old 20GB photo. If that makes any sense... Bottom line, the Nano is smaller and the flash drive makes it faster as far as turning on/off and loading music. The flash drive does make it more durable than the hard-disk based regular iPods, but its also easier to break the casing/screen as a result. So basically you have to be real careful with them. Dont drop the video iPod and dont keep the Nano in tight pants pockets. I think you should find out what you/your girlfriend are going to be doing while listening to the iPod. If its a lot of physical activity, go for the Nano, if not, definitley spring for the extra $50.00, the screens on the new iPods are beautiful.

ok... heres the skibbies on the ipods.

i am getting a video. the only benefit of the nano, is it is tiny. and has the chrome back....sweet. but other than that, 2 or 4 gb of songs. that either 500 or 1000 songs. i have a shuffle right now that i use for my College classes (cus it is a thumb drive also) and i use it to listen between classes. The video alows you to store 150 hrs of video to watch. ona tiny screen. wether it is movies, music videos, people getting hit in the nuts (ebaums...) or whatever you want to watch / listen to. i will be using this for my travelling and boring days at work. where i can just watch whatever i want, it can store about 100 full movies, (normal length)

if size is an issue, go with the nano, it is tiny, if not, go with the bigger better video. cuz what if you ever have 1000+ songs you want to listen to, and now you can't cuz the nano only holds 1000. who are you gonna delete? i don't want to delete anyone...

and those are the skibbies (for me atleast)

Thanks for the skibbies! hahah

You're right that 30gig should come in handy. Plus, I don't need it to be the size of a credit card, it's pretty damn small already!

if you don't like the color, or don't want to scratch it get a skin for it. i have a complete vinyl "overlay" for my Shuffle, and when i get the vid...sure as HELLLS i am gonna put a sticker on that bad boy. i abuse my stuff, and i need the extra protection the vinyl will apply. they also make complete leather cases, silicone cases, ding protectors, and screen savers... i recomend a mix of all of them.
