Indianapolis - Friday is a cold day to be outside, but for one worker, it was especially difficult. It happened around 10:30 am on the city's northwest side.

A man was part of a crew conducting bridge inspection at Lafayette Road and Mill Pond Lane when he walked onto some soft soil. He quickly began sinking into the mud and ended up stuck, waist-deep. A coworker tried for 15 minutes to pull him out to no avail.

The coworker called 911, and Pike Township and Indianapolis Fire Department crews responded to rescue the man, who was stuck for about 40 minutes.

The worker did not have any injuries, although one member of the rescue crew said given the cold temperatures, it certainly couldn't have been pleasant. The man is expected to return to work next week.

Fire officials say soil is extremely soft this time of year, and the worker didn't realize how soft it was.

A man was doing bridge inspection work on the northwest side when he got stuck in the mud underneath the bridge. It happened at Lafayette Road and Mill Pond Road in Pike Township.

The situation got more serious when the man tried to get out and he was eventually waist deep in the mud. He got one of his legs out, but was trapped and he and his coworker had no choice but to call for emergency help.

"So what we did have was not necessarily a trench rescue, but an individual who was stuck in the mud and unable to extricate himself. With the assistance of IFD trench rescue team we were able to utilize the ground pads to get a good purchase point, good access to the patient and with that assistance we were able to remove the victim from the mud," said Martin Wilkey of the Pike Township Fire Department.

They were able to remove the victim and he is unharmed. He says he's a little embarrassed about the situation, but fine.
