Default Music for an IPOD?

Hey everyone. I am looking into getting an IPOD and have a few questions. Actually just one. Do you have to use the iTunes to load music? If so that seems like a raw deal. If I have 500 songs I would have spent 500 bucks to get those 500 songs? Can someone help clarify that for me? Is there anopther way to load songs like other mp3's?

Thanks guys and gals.

If you have a PC, there's a whole bunch of applications that you can basically just drag and drop your mp3s into.

I use Anapod Explorer (clicky).

And you can use iTunes to just load your music into. You don't HAVE to buy your music from their service. iTunes is a program that just has an additional downloading service included with it.

If you have CDs you can rip those into mp3s to put on your iPod. iTunes will even do it for you.
