Default Noise Ordinance Ticket

So I was out cruising tonight and since it was such a wonderful night (overcast and 50s) I had my windows down and rolling at least 5mph under. About 7pm I get pulled over by a somewhat knowledgable cop since I've seen him at the store a few times. Just for grins he asked if he could take a look at the setup I had so I hop out to show him. He has out a camera to take pictures of his latest nab and it about floored him when he saw my tiny little 8s. Well, he put away his camera and said that he must have nabbed the wrong car so I assured him I was the one bumping the strip. I give him a bit of a demo and he is floored. He was cool. Shredded the ticket and asked me to keep it down.

There is nothing like pounding out the notes so hard that your eyes shake and your voice warbles when you talk. Doing it with two 8s... priceless.

They are there for a reason but the cops need to enforce them unilaterally instead of just picking on loud stereos. There are motorcycles all over with the baffles taken out that are much louder than any stereo setup I've ever heard and they never get stopped.

Cheers to that. Hell, I've heard some ricers with no cats or resonators who's exhaust is WAY louder than my setup and most of them don't get stopped.

actually if you read the noise laws, or motorcycle laws.... They limit just about every type of
noise pollution
from people preaching on the sidewalks, to automobiles, motorcycles, audio systems, and even parties.

have you ever heard a stock harley? far from the monsters screaming down the road.... they have put on straight through pipes, which ARE ILLEGAL!!!! but do you think a cop is gonna stop a nice looking harley (the blue collar trophy for most of middle america?)

I have also found a trick to noise pollution.... try Bumpin 80's music, ACDC, Mettallica, stuff like that, instead of Rap, you'll see less and less of those noise pollution laws.

The problem is our cops don't have to pull over what they don't want to pull over, they have the choice to look the other way when a nice harley pulls by or a late ford mustang with no muffler.

The other side of that... Bike Weeks down in sturgis...Daytona beach... etceteras when the cops get ____ed at a group of bikes, they start passin out tickets, and if they can't find any violations you see alot of "noise pollution laws"

but congrats on gettin out of that ticket... i have learned to shut up and if they are gonna let me go, let them do it... think of how it would go if you got the cop on the wrong day...

"oh no i am the one who was bumpin down the strip too loud"

"oh really with those tiny bumps you call subwoofers"

"duh yeah copper let me show you"

"wow thats pretty loud... here you can have this..."
(recieved a golden ticket for 75.00 noise pollution)

I beg to differ! They sure the heck do! Sound ordinances apply to ALL vehicles period and I agree with chadfo that Hardley Davidsons are among the worst offenders and the least likely to get popped for their Crappy loud exhaust. Plus the riders think they are the Coolest thing on the road. I just laugh about how much they overpaid for their bikes and roll on down the road.

The stock Harley Destroyer will reach 162db. I work at the Harley plant that builds them as a computer technician.

As for the other straight-piped harleys, people don't buy them for their loudness... they buy them for the safety factor the pipes bring. Here in my area, the cops will gladly look the other way for harleys with strait-pipes simply because we have many motorcycle cops. At one point, one of the counties was trying to ban any motorcycle with an exhaust louder than 120db (effectively limiting the type of bikes to Vespa Cruisers only). The court ruling that day was great... it was all chalked up to nothing more than safety factor of bikes for which the judge involved in the case rode off on his Harley-Davidson Night Train (one of the louder bikes made by Harley). Cheers.

Safety shmafty, the pipes are loud to say LOOK AT ME Period. They also give the non-riding public another excuse to legislate motorcycles out of existance. I ride and don't want this to happen in my lifetime.
With all the new polution controls that are coming out it won't be long till they won't be able to change out the stock exhausts anymore.

yeah i also have to say nothing about the harley pictured (even though it is "stock") has anything normal riding bike about it. sure technically they only make that bike as it is, but its a drag racing bike.

The point i was making (which may possibly be hard to figure out) was that 883 and fatboys the harleys that are on the road, when stock are a lot less quiet than when the riders put on their straights. even thouhg by no means are they a quiet bike (btw i love harleys. think thier great) but i roll on a honda rebel 250. : )

I agree. In my experience, even as loud as they are, you can't hear them in a car from any reasonable distance that would make any difference to their safety. A lot of that is because the pipes project the sound rearward. I've passed many bikes that I couldn't hear until they were only a few car lengths from me but when they passed I could hear them for what seems like miles. That was also with the windows down.

The people who are the most dangerous to bikers don't ride around with their windows down. If you want to save bikers, and everyone else for that matter, get driving with cellular phones banned and institute mandatory competence testing for aging drivers. One of my old riding buddies was hit in the rear while sitting a stop sign by an elderly lady. She claims she didn't see him. It was daylight, his lights were functioning properly, and he was wearing a bright red and white jacket.

Harleys aren't the only bikes that are super loud...ever taken a rocket to the redline with an aftermarket exhaust? Back home, I used to go riding with a friend on an '05 R1 with aftermarket pipes, his brother on a Harley with straight pipes, and me on my 93 Katana. I don't know what the guy did to the exhaust on my Katana before I owned it, but I can drown out the Harley no problem when I am running 9,000+ RPM's.

I let a friend of mine take my bike out for a ride on a calm summer day. No joke, I could hear him the entire trip. Turns out, he had gone 5 miles before he turned around. There were points on that bike when it got so loud, I had to put in ear plugs because I was getting a headache.

I am looking at upgrading now though...time for something a bit more powerful (I drag race at a local track in the summer). But anyway, Harleys aren't the only loud bikes on the road.

DEAD on. While we are at it, allow people to install cellphone jammers in their car... or for that matter, install a cellphone jammer at the factory turn it on if the parking break is not engaged. Also, install cellphone jammers in every single theater madated by zoning ordinances. I don't know how many times I've been cut off by people with cellphones glued to their ears. At least if I had my stereo blarin, I can still pay attention to the damn roads.

(Unchecked "Notify me" god I hate the new system, but I think it should be fixed now)

I'm with you brother. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had something that would disrupt cell phones when I was around(Actually hoping for permanent failure). My only fear was the person would drive worse because they'd be more focused on getting the phone to work than driving.
