I am not a fan of HP anything. Mainly since replacements parts are usually expensive or unavaliable. I've had the best luck with Toshiba. They are the pure work horse laptops. They may not be the faster or cheapest. But they will take a beating like nothing else.

I like Sony Vaios. But they tend to be delicate if you carry them everyday.

deal with 500 here...nothing but problems...
if you like spending three hours on the phone to report a problem, only to have them take three days to order a part and have it be the wrong part....
then have some idiot who doesn't know which end of a screw driver to use work on your machine.

i have had my own experiences with dell over 75% have been disasters.
go research it yourself, dell has had the worst customer support for a long time now.

stay away from dell.
don't talk yourself into it saying 'i'll get a good machine' or ' i know how to take care of it, i'll never have a problem'

hmm seems like you get the short end of the stick all the time. I always have had nuthing but quality service and support from them. Even at consumer level. When ever I call to report a problem I tell them the problem and they send me the part out right away with out doing tests. Although I am governemnt so our service contract is proally diff.

There is a reason why they are one of the worlds biggest comp companys....

HAPPY BDAY BTW lol. you shouldnt spend it arguing over comps

do you need a laptop for just school, word processing, internet, and email, or do you want to have more power to burn dvds, play games, etc... my personal opinion on laptops, i like acers and toshibas. I'm not a fan of dell since I used to have to work on them all the time, but I always reconmend dell laptops for people getting their first laptop. I have 3 laptops, 2 acers and 1 dell. I use the dell for work, the acer to play on, ond the other acer is for my wife. If you like playing games, go with the xps, if you just want to use it for school and have a little extra, get a D610. I've never had an issue with Dell's tech support, other than they wanted me to reseat the memory when the LCD was cracked :p good luck on your search... go to cnet.com and look up some reviews.

Trying to be objective I have heard so many nightmares about Dell. Its probably because they deal in such high volume, but everyone that I have talked to says that their Dell was like a dream for about 6 months and then went to hell and customer service was bad. They claim planned obselesence.

I dont know. I really like the look of the Hp 9000z and Im impressed with its dual 64 processors, but I know that HP can rip you a new one on parts and service.

Has anyone seen or heard about that particular model, which is also very similar to the 6000.

Thanks for the comments. The search goes on.

Also, what is the deal with exploding batteries?

Overall you can get much better laptops for a good amount less than a Sony. There are literally dozens of places to get laptops from that include specialty stores for reasonable prices.

I have and HP dv2000z and I like it alot. I got everything I want with it in terms of specs and will upgrade the hard drive and RAM myself to save a crapton of money. Just be aware that HP tech support (like many of the big manufacturers) is in Asia.

if your going to be carrying this laptop around then i would recommend getting something smaller than a 17' screen, like a 15.4.

it all depends on what your budget is, but my biggest recommendation would be to get a core duo or a core 2 duo if you can wait for it.
