Owning Your Own Business
Hey all,
I've been thinking lately about the running of your own business. Kind of like working life in general. Most folks go to a job that they don't exactly love, collect their paychecks, and go home for the weekend. The really lucky ones go to a job they really enjoy and get paid really really well for it.
I know that some people have no choice when running their own business because that's the only option they've had to make enough of a living. Some people kind of just stumble on it.
A lot of people take the conventional path; get an education or degree, and end up working for other people the rest of their lives. They go from job to job at the whim of their employers always looking for the better, cheaper, smarter guy. They get used up, burnt out, or just replaced by 45.
I'm wondering for those of you on scionlife, either running your own business or working for "the Man", what your story is. How did you find out or decide to take the path you took. Was it all about just the risk that you decided to take?

Man I never thought I would ever post this in a car forum. But since the question has been asking about working for yourself ill share on here. I used to be self employed doing property management, man was it great. Didnt have no one to tell me what time I had to come in, took my lunch break when ever I wanted to. My average pay was like 3-4k a month. Man was it great waking up late lol. But all of that ended like 5 months ago. Now I started my own business, am my own boss, work only 4 days a week and the pay is 3 times as more then what I used to make. Seriously if your interested PM and ill give ya more info.
You should watch MTV Teen Cribs..man those kids are spoiled as heck. One kid had a indoor swimming pool and basketball court. But the reason why im telling you to watch it is because of what the parents do for a living.
Some of the hardest working people in the world are those who own and opperate thier own business. Most startups don't have the money to hire lots of staff or management so the owners often have to do it all for a while. Many small business owners live and breathe the place 24/7 with little or no vacation (at least for the first few years until it starts to do well). You also have to look at the huge percentage of small businesses that fail within the first few years.
With that said, it can also be one of the most rewarding things you can do. It can be great working for yourself and there can be a much bigger financial pay-off if things go well. It's a gamble. Your best bet is to get some education in small business management. You'll learn about writing a business plan, gauging competition, best financing options, marketing...etc. You might decide you would rather buy into a franchise than start your own deal. Either way, its best to do plenty of homework before you make the leap.

I am about to get out of the Coast Guard, go back to school and work full time for my father-in-law. It's going to be doing a job that is going to make millions and eventually billions with a B. The whole situation i'm in is crazy. But it's all happening and becoming real.
The only reason I mention this is because his business is going to involve doing some investing. Mostly looking at different companies and we would be also looking at investing in CERTIAN start ups IF THEY MEET OUR REQUIREMENTS. PM me and i'll let you know more.

Market America: Two coworkers of mine were sucked into this. Spent three years and thousands of dollars trying really hard to make it work.
Amway: Good friends of ours did this for 6 years. They too spent thousands of dollars and tons of energy on it.
Herbalife: My own brother got suckered on this one. He sank tons of his own money into this and was 100% dedicated to it for about two years.
What do these all have in common? All of the people I mentioned eventually had to cut their loses and bail. For every one person who actually does well, there are thousands who loose money. You no longer just have friends because everyone is a prospect. Nearly everyone involved in these things will over exagerate their income. Why? Because it's not about selling a product...it's about selling the marketing plan. They will swear up and down that they (or someone close to them) has made tons of money doing it but it's almost always a lie.
The promise of big money and being your own boss is very appealing. I understand why people want so desperately to be the one who will make it work. After all, the people who failed at it just did it wrong. Or they didn't work at it hard enough. Or if they had just stuck with it a little longer it would have paid off. I've heard them all. The only people making any real money at it or the top 2% which you will NEVER be in. So please..take the pictures of the boats and mansions off your refrigerator, take the Carlton Sheets CDs out of your stereo, and start working at a real career.

If you start your own business what type of business would it be? I'm going to be looking at investing a lot of money in the up-coming years. I might be able to help with financing it. PM me if you want to talk about this.
I have been working as a t-shirt printer for the last 11 years, my money sucks, but the job security is awesome. I can yell at my boss and not get fired. I have had to work this to make a steady pay check, to pay for me to not live with my parents. I am thinking about making my own car inspired t-shirt line and selling them online. But I am not sure I want to take the risk.
Not certain of the latest figure, but years ago I read that 80% of new businesses fail in the first year.

I smell a business partnership.
