Reasons:
1. Grass area is small (less than an acre)
2. I hate the noise power mowers make.
3. I hate pollution that power mowers generate.
4. Great exercise (efficient cutting at faster than walking speed).

So does anyone have one? I was surprise they still make push mowers. I found one at Home Depot. Are Craftsman reel mowers reliable?

 

my dad has one, quite hilarious actually...

they work, except you would have to rake your lawn afterwards if you dont like your grass being mulched back into your lawn. They work well and have a cool slicing noise too... cant go wrong with that.

 

you also have to pick up the sticks before you mow... errr cut the grass...

you can get a eletric lawn mower

but with the push reel mower its a self sharping blade and there cheap

they still use 'em on golf courses

After looking at that, I'm mystified as to why our mower is gas powered.

 

I LOVE those kind of mowers. It's the only thing I've ever mowed a lawn with.

Then again, my family still doesn't have a dishwasher or caller ID/call waiting....we finally got cable and highspeed internet.

 

they are cool... tho if your lawn is lumpy it may be more trouble than it should be.
plus some come with a hopper attatchment that can catch MOST of the grass so you dont have to rake.

also if your grass gets to tall it may be a bit difficult to cut too

 

I always used a "Scott's Silent" reel push mower. They are the best - and easiest to push.

Precision machine - the reel blades didn't actually touch the fixed blade, they missed by a few thousandths. Far enough away for no noise, close enough to cut the individual blades.

Don't even know if they still make 'em.

 

My mom had one of these for a bit, after my parents got divorced. It was the most horriable peice of crap. You had to maintain a pretty fast pace to keep the blade spinning, and if you hit any tiny thing (stick/seed pod whatever) in the grass the whole thing would stop instantly, and you'd nearly fly over the handle. I got feedup with it,stole it and donated it to a charity.

She bought it because she said she could never pull start a lawnmower, but I was the one mowing, so I am not sure why it even mattered.

But in closing, I hate them, and I still want so smash them all. They are a waste for 99% of yards. If you enjoy using one of these on a regualr bassis, you may alos enjoy churning you own butter and washing your close on a board in a river.

The one exception to this is I've used power reel mowers to cut baseball feilds, and they work great, and cut awsome.

haha, i used to have to cut the lawn when i was a kid in SC, over a 1/2 acre with a push mower. good times.
