Default RANT: People Charging Paypal Fees

I don't like you people. You know who you are. Setting an asking price for an item and then asking someone to add 3% for Paypal fees.

That's dumb. Stop doing it.

If you want to charge $300 for something and also ask for the 3% Paypal fee, you should have 2 options:

1. Ask for $310 and call it a day.
2. Suck up the $9 for the convenience of using Paypal. That's why the fee exists.

And before anyone chimes in about their policy, I've checked and it is only against policy to charge the separate fee for an auction (eBay). Personal sales are "ok" to ask for the fee. But it just makes you sound like a cheapskate.

Either suck it up or adjust your asking price. And not that I go around buying a lot of items from the Classifieds here, but I purposely avoid sales that even mention it.

I understand it for people selling wheels (especially higher end wheels) and the fees are substantial.

When someone says "I want $xxxx for the wheels, but please add 3% for paypal fees" I understand that. It's a good break down.

To me, its basically the same as a person saying I want $xxx for this item, and i'll get you an exact shipping quote so you know how much extra needs to be put in for that. Rather than saying you want a set price and possssssssssssssibly jacking the price a little higher than it actually needs to be.

As far as like, $20 items and such.. yea, the 3% paypal fee plea is a little laughable.

Ya, for $20 things it definitely sounds more retarded if you're adding like $1 to your total... but even for the more expensive things, I think it's easier to tack some on if you must.

Say you have $1000 set of wheels... your fees are $30 sure, but you're also still getting $970 for your wheels - which really someone could have negotiated out of you anyway. Even at $2000, if you're pinching someone for an extra $60 out of $2k? That's kinda lame... IMO anyway.

That said, I don't run Paypal and I'm not the one making the sales.

I agree ack, just tact on the fee to the asking price and give a breakdown by saying $xxx is for the item and $xx is the 3% for PayPal.

I don't see why anyone is asking for 3% anyway, that's the charge PayPal charges the SELLER for using their service, not the buyer.

Devil's advocate: I can see why they would want you to pay the fee, if they offer other ways to pay, since they aren't making you use PayPal.

+3% for paypal + shipping sucks imo. Set a price and negotiate the little things in PM's. Local pickup with cash eliminates both for example...

just like normal shopping, the sticker price is $10.00, But the cashier wants $10.70, because of tax. Why can't stores post the final price?

Well stores at least charge different % of sales tax based on what the item is and where you are. Like PA has no tax on clothes, but I have to pay like 4% in NY. And then 8% in NY where I am for everything else (except food).

Paypal is just a flat fee - and it is meant to be for the convenience of using their service, like I said. Sales tax actually is supposed to go to state things like roads and such. Supposed to anyway.
