Default Rims and wheels-please don't be ignorant on purpose

I know that there are a people out there that are just using 'rims' in response to modern times or someone elses post but it is terribly inaccurate-a lot of ricers wouldn't know the difference but an educated Scion owner should.

Rims are just the outside most hoop that the tire goes on (think bicycle wheel-the rim is the hoop on the outside that attaches to the spokes) even when talking about a car wheel.

Wheels are the whole thing from where it mounts on the car and bolts to the lug bolts all the way to where the tires mount.

Why does it matter? When someone is trying to talk about the wheel over the phone, email, etc-where there are no pictures available it's easy to not get all the information needed. Rims don't have an offset or a bolt pattern or even a lip size because without the rest of the wheel there is no mounting basis-that can lead people into getting the wrong equipment for their car-money lost.

Why else does it matter-it's like having a type R Mazda with VTEC

I hear what you are saying, but on a bicycle you have to build the wheel and on a car the wheels for the most part don't come apart.

Rims is a term that has been around for a long time. When you say I got new wheels, generally someone will think you bought a new car. When you say I got new rims most of the time people are going to think you got new wheels.

It's like people saying I got headers for my xb, well technically you got a header for your xb.

There are hundreds of people on this forum that spell a lot, alot. It's wrong, but what good is it going to do to get bent out of shape over it?

Come on people! The song doesn't go, "The rims on the bus go 'round and 'round".

Let's Call the Bobby's and have them thrown in the slammer for misuse of the Queen's english. After all what other language has more than one word that means the same thing and has more than one meaning for every word.

Dude, I'm thinking about getting some 18 inch giraffes-sounds cool

I used to get really bent out of shape when I heard it because there are a lot of new people were learning that was what they were called (passsed down ignorance) and it's like that thread where they guy had to xplain what JDM meant

I meant this more for anyone out there that didn't actually realize there was a difference.

Oooh, that's not a bad idea. Although, I hear the 4-2-1 gopher is the way to go... I guess it all depends on what Toucan you're using.

I could see your point if there were actually car rims for sale that then required the remaining hardware to mount. I've never in my life heard of someone getting just the rim...

"They said they just want the rim, start pulling those fake rivets out..."

Actually on a true 2 piece or 3 piece wheel (like some expensive BBS' for example) you can dissamble them and order just a rim (in case you damaged just the rim) or the inner wheel in case you want to change bolt pattern or the offset for the rear or something
