To matt_a:

I suppose we can go back and forth on this one, but my mind will not be changed and neither will yours....so I just want to end it this way:

Its true that Hussein is a brutal dictator, but that isnt why Bush wants to remove him. The whole truth is that our politicians have encouraged Husseins brutality, thus showing that they have no quarrel with his behavior in principle.

(details for that can be found in the definitive works on this subject by the award-winning journalist Dilip Hiro, Iraq and The Iran-Iraq War.)

Its true that Hussein has violated UN resolutions, but that isnt why Bush wants to remove him. The whole truth is that our own politicians have no real respect for international law, and have encouraged Hussein to violate these laws in the past.

(A study by Stephen Zunes of the University of San Francisco shows that Israel has violated 32 UN resolutions since 1968—nearly twice as many as Iraq. Ye you never hear a peep about Israel.)

Its true that Hussein has invaded his neighbors, but that isnt why Bush wants to remove him. The whole truth is that our politicians encouraged Hussein's first invasion, and were complicit in his second.

(Again, reference Iraq and The Iran-Iraq War.)

Bush, Sr. called on the Iraqi people to overthrow Hussein. The Iraqi people responded. They expected US support. They didnt receive it.

Husseins army crushed the rebels while our jets flew overhead. We could have stopped Hussein, but Bush, Sr. ordered our military not to intervene. The Bush administration felt the wrong people were responding to our call for revolt. They wanted Husseins officers to remove him instead, so the dictatorial regime would remain in place, only without Saddam.

Colin Powell and Dick Cheney were on the National Security Council at that time. They were involved in these decisions. Our government was once again complicit in Husseins brutality. (For an insiders view of these events see The World Transformed by Bush, Srs National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft—note the ironic title.)

Everyone should remain vigilant aganist the constant barrage of propaganda being pushed from every direction.

Never forget History. Learn from it.

If our politicians really want to adopt an anti-dictatorship policy they can start by:

--Renouncing any future use of the CIA to topple or impose governments on other countries.

--Apologize to the people of the world for past such activities.

--Cease propping up existing dictatorships with foreign aid and/or pretending were putting pressure on them with counterproductive trade sanctions.

--Stop fulminating war against Iraq.

I like it, I like it...

On another note. Fox News reported this morning that the man that filmed the execution with his phone (said to be a security guard) has been arrested. The man that leaked THE video to the entire world now has another problem... an upset Iraqi government!
