Default the scion logo is a rip!

ok, well, it's prolly not, but now that I have your attention, doesn't it look alot like the SPLIT logo?

http://www.splitusa.com/

I did a search and nothing came up, but I'm sure I'm not the first person to notice the simlarities...

If you think that looks the same, look for the Studebaker logo.

I run a set of Studebaker hub caps with my steelies, now there is a closer match.

Took me a second. Muchos props on your simpsons trivia!

For those of you that don't get it, here's the skinny.
Mr. Sparkle can first be found in the episode where Marge becomes the "listen lady" for the church. While she is gone, Homer, Bart and Lisa take a trip to the city dump, and find a strange Japanese box with Homer's face on the front of it. It becomes the goal of the three to find out what this is, and why Homer's picture adorns the box. They get in contact with the company that makes the product, and find out that it is called Mr. Sparkle. Mr. Sparkle is owned by two Japanese conglomerates, a fish company and an electric company. When creating the logo for Mr. Sparkle, they simply merged their two companies respective logos and it created a face that resembled Homer's.

NOW, becasue the logo was found on a box, there's already some synergy going here. Do you suppose that this logo rip was intentional, then? Could it be that scion marketing (search "Jeri Yoshizu"), in it's fervor to capture the attention of a younger audience, intentionally ripped a logo from an already prominent youth brand, ala a reference from a favorite TV show in which "two Japanese conglomerates" create a logo for a "box"???

Nice! I was wondering if anyone would get that. But it was worth me not explaining in order to find out who would recognize it. Nice explanation too.

frogbox- I think that's cool that you're rockin stutz hubcaps. I'm realy not feelin the similarities between the stud logo and scion's, tho.

what I usually do, is sit WAY back in my chair, and screw my eyes up so that the image gets all blurry. Even then, they still look way diff.

loose translation of copyright laws indicate that less than a 30% variation indicates something of questionable origin. I suppose that was my original point, but my point has changed.

I think mikeC very subtly hit on something huge, and I'm surprised that nobody's grabbed on to it...

do you suppose that scion took direct license with several references from pop culture in creating the logotype?

certainly, creation of the logo was probably outsourced to a grx firm, but do you think the 'designer' deserves a rap on the knuckles for 'unoriginality', or could this have been the sinister intent of scion marketing, ever intent on owning our BRAINS????

A desinger friend of mine suggested that there may be less variation between the two logos than i thought, and suggested the 'blur test' to each - what do you think?

This was a gaussian blur at 6px radius.

Not close enough to stand up in court, but I do see the similarities, yeah.

nah, I'm not really suggesting it was a real rip - my real question is:

do you suppose that scion intentionally took direct license with several references from pop culture in creating the logotype?

I think Toyota probably hired an ad agency to design the logo, the same way most companies do.

Toyota Sienta: Look at the hood emblem "S" for Sienta. The "SCION" name had to be added to the emblem to let people know more about "SCION."

Hino Trucks (division of Toyota): Nearly enclosed circle. The horizontal bar is replaced by the SCION lettering.
