Skype or not to Skype that is the question?

Attn. ScionLifers:

I'm looking into this communication thing over the net. VOIP services, Skype, Google Talk! etc.

I'd like to ask opinions on what direction I should go and why? I also plan to get Verizon wireless access for my laptop. Any other services in the northeast region?

Last time I checked, Skype was free. And Verizon does have the best network.

Have used the free Skype version for over a year with a Plantronics earphone/mike combo. It has worked flawless for me with Europe & Oz sounding like they were in the next room.
